PUFFS CI6ARET ON FIRST LEAP FROM AIRPLANE Curtiss Sales Director Says Floating to Earth Pleasant. Floating to earth after making a parachute leap from a plane is one of the "most delightful experiences imaginable," according to Walker W Winslow, Curtiss sales director, k o made his first leap Wednesday •I ter noon, Winslow and Gene Rock, professional jumper, leaped from a Bellanca plane, piloted by Miss Elinor Smith, 18. holder of the women’s sustained flight record, who with Rock and Bert White, are here demonstrating the Irving Air Chute Company's parachutes. "I jumped out of the plane head first,” Winslow said after the experience. "and fell about 1,000 feet before I pulled the rip cord. I waited until I saw Rock, who followed me, open his parachute before I opened mine, in order to get out of his way. "I will admit it was sort of a temptation to yank on that rip cord when I heard the wind whistling by me. When I did pull the cord, it was less than two seconds until the huge parasol-like chute was open and had jerked me right side up. “Then I went through a most delightful experience, floating lazily and quietly to earth. Rock was about 600 feet from me, but we could converse easily. "In order to test the theory that in jumping one’s nerves are quiet, I tried lighting a cigaret and smoked It on the way down.” Winslow had beginners’ luck, landing in the center of the CurtissMars Hill airport, while Rock, who has made hundreds of leaps, landed in a ditch west of the field. Wednesday night a motion picture, demonstrating uses of parachutes, was given at the Curtiss hangar. The party was to leave today for St. Louis.
