LIQUOR SURVEY ' EXPERT SOUGHT BY COMMISSION Law Enforcement Group Has Trouble Finding impartial Ageni. B*t Unitrd Vrr** WASHINGTON. Sept. 4.—While Virtually every man. woman and child in the United States professes to have an opinion on prohibition. President Hoover's law enforcement commission is having considerable j difficulty obtaining an impartial ex- | pert on the subject. Two months ago the commission decided to seek a competent person j to make an impartial study of prohibition enforcement. The position still is unfilled. Prohibition is admitted to be one of the foremost subjects confronting the commission. The prohibition subcommittee is headed by chairman George W. Wickersham. who recently wrote a letter urging greater state cooperation in prohibition enforcement. Whoever is selected to assay the prohibition situation will have j available views of high government officials involved in enforcement activities. Both treasury "bnd justice department authorities have appeared before the commission at closed hearings. The commission, which was meeting here today, has announced it would hold open hearings starting about Oct. 1 on prohibition and other subjects. The commission report will not be ready for President Hoover for about two years. A preliminary re- j port may be submitted earlier.

STATE POLICE TO MEET Drivers' Licrnsr Enforcement to Be Discussed Enforcement of the drivers’ license Jaw will be the principal topic of discussion at a meeting of the state police at Camp Tccumseh, near Delphi, on Tippecanoe river. Wednesday and Thursday of next week. Secretary of State Otto G. F'tfield arranged the meeting, and will preside with Chief Robert T. Humes of the police department.

POPE DECLARES CHURCH, STATE ARE SEPARATE Message to Students Says Error Originates From Knowledge Lack. B)i United Prrta VATICAN CITY, Sept. 4.—The church and state have separate spheres, and the church can not be subject to the state. Pope Pius XI declared in a message today at the opening session cf the congress of Italian Catholic university students. The pope's pronouncement said: “The problem of the relations oi state and church is the subject of theoretical and practical errors widely spread because of the prevailing doctrines of those who want the church subject to civil power and those who want total separation cf church and state. .“Any error in this matter originates precisely from a wrong understanding or poor knowledge of the different nature and scopes of the two powers. “To pit the state against the church means to perturb the providential order in human association and injure both the individual and the community.” The pope's message was prompted by the fact that the agenda of the students’ conference includes consideration of the relations between church and state. OPENS DEPARTMENT Anew radio department will be opened by the Charles Mayer Company next Monday. A large section of tire third floor will be devoted to the department with demonstration rooms, and radio salon where the latest models of R. C. A., Majestic and Victor radio and phonograph combinations will be shown. J. H. Hopwood, formerly in charge of the radio department of the Indianapolis Power and Light Company, will be in charge. STOCK JUDGERS WILLCOMPETE Delaware County Juniors to Represent State. The Delaware county junior livestock judging team, which was run-ner-up in the contest won by La Porte county boys, will represent Indiana in the National Club Congress in connection with the InNrnational Livestock Exposition at Chicago in December. Members of the team arc: Lawrence Love, and Harold Wright of Eaton, Ind., and Marshall Ellis, ol near Muncie. James Love, of Eaton, was alternate. Each *>f the boys will be given S2OO by the state board of agriculture to make the Chicago trip. The Vigo county team, which scored highest on dairy cattle judging, will carry Indiana's colors in the national junior contest at the National Dairy Show in St. Louis, In October.
