RADIO ENGINEER SAYS NEW TUBE GREATADVANCE Increased Amplification and Distance Said to Be Features. O. H. Caldwell, radio engineer and former member of the federal radio commission looks upon screen-grid radio as one of the outstanding advances in the science of radio. “The screen-grid alternating current tube,’’ says Caldwell, "certainly marks a tremendous technical advance in tube design in the matter of both amplification and sensitiveness of operation. On that, all engineering advice seems to agree "The outstanding characteristic of the screen-grid tube is that ft greatly increases amplification in both radio and audio-frequency stages. This, together with its use as a power detector, gives increased distance reception and added quality of reproduction. "Due to the high-amplification possibilities of this tube, an extremely sensitive set can be designed,’’ said Caldwell, a statement wholly in agreement with the opinion of A. Atwater Kent, who said-' "I regard the screen-grid tube as thoroughly sicentific and practical, when used in a properly designed set. Many thousands of our new screen-grid radio sets are already in use. Reports by the owners stress especially the decided increase in the range of these sets, their exceptional selectivity and bautiful tone quality.” Caldwell, editor of Radio Retailing, in a recent issue listed the advantages which advocates of screengrid have set forth as follows: “Tremendously increases amplification; makes greater sensitivity and selectivity; will produce great volume with fidelity of tone; is independent of line-voltage fluctuations.” Caldwell is a native of Lexington, Ky., and was graduated from Purdue in electrical engineering. STUDIO DIVERSIONS CHANGE SOMETIMES Battrefly Bow Tie Plays Chief Role in New Idea. Studio diversions: Disciples of Lady Luck among the musicians at the NBC studios no longer bet on how many will be fired at the next rehearsal under a hard-boiled director. They put their money on the endurance of a violently-bobbing butterfly bow tie at the throat of the oboe player.

BEAUTY HOUR WILL BE HEARD
Ida Baily Allen in Charge of Columbia’s New Program. A new r series of beauty broadcasts will be opened by Ida Bailey Allen at 9:30 Tuesday morning, Sept. 3, over stations of the Columbia broadcasting system. These broadcasts, to be heard every Tuesday morning at the same time, will be descriptive of the methods of beauty culture employed by Helen Lewis, a graduate beautician, using beauty adds originated and manufactured by Thine Products, sponsors of the series. It is Mrs. Allen’s desire to present the cultivation of woman’s natural beauty in such manner that all women, no matter hpw busy, will want to take the few minutes necessary each day to remain attractive. The proper methods for home treatment of various types of skin, the care of the hands, the care of the general health, and in fact, all the many things women can do in their homes to maintain a well groomed appearance will be taken up Sn turn, the various processes
Surpassing all former conception of tonal fidelity, the new Day-Fan Radio is distinguished by a musical quality, BRILLIANT ... challenging! Silvery clear reproduction of high notes matches a rich presentation of the resonant bass in true proportion. No distortion, even at immense volume. Beautiful walnut cabinets: a magnificently fashioned large console with sliding panels; two smaller consoles, one gracefully simple, the other more impressive in line. Priced as low as $169.50. Audio supremacy: Day-Fan has achieved notable results this season as in seasons past through a particular attention to the audio frequency amplifier in its radio (a main source of tone quality.) Important refinements by Day-Fan engineers have been incorporated in this newest receiver. See the New Day Fan Models at the State Fair This Week
carried on in the salon and described over the air during the broadcasts. The programs will be augmented by musical interludes interpreting the theme of the broadcast. The first musical program will present Vivian Holt and Richard Hale in selections from “Indian Love Lyrics,” featuring the “Kashmiri Song.” SCREEN GRID TUBE IS FIRST ADVANCE STEP Prediction Is Made That Engineers Will Make. Improvements. The new A. C. screen-grid tube, is not going to revolutionize radio, according to an article appearing in the September issue of Radio News. The screen-grid tube is a most important contribution to the . advancement of the radio art, but it is to be regarded as only one of scores of contributions toward that end. When enthusiasts call this tube “the last word” they show scant faith in the ability of engineers to keep right on improving this most important device.

STEINITE HAS NEW TESTING MEANSIN USE Receivers Are Checked by System Simular to Broadcasting. % r The most up-to-date and complete equipment yet devised for the production testing of radio receivers has been installed by the Stetnite Radio Company in their new plant in Ft. Wayne, Ind. This consists of a system of crystal controlled oscillators for testing receivers, and represents a distinct innovation in testing methods. Three oscillators are used whose frequency is controlled by quartz crystals in the same manner as employed by the most advanced broadcasting stations, the wave lengths of these oscillators representing high, medium and low wave lengths to which the receiver must respond. The power output of these oscillators is calibrated and is then reduced from the high power by an attenuator system until the signal is approximately the same as that received from a distant broadcasting station when the receiver is hooked up to an average antenna. This minute power is then fed from each oscillator into a single line, which is a heavily insulated wire in a brass conduitt system, and is piped around to the individual positions where the radio experts are at work testhig the receivers as they come from the production lines. * The testers use these signals on the three different wave lengths to test the ability of the reciver to pick up and amplify a signal to the same degree as a standard receiver by which their position is calibrated. The degree of sensitivity by which the receivers are subjected are made by means of measuring instruments rather than by listening. : This crystal-controlled oscillator system of testing receivers is one of the most important recent contributions to the advancement of the science of radio manufacturing. Its development was inspired by the desire of the Steinite Company to assure the absolute perfection of every receiver manufactured in its now Ft. Wayne plant. Making Sets Grigsby-Grunow Company, world’s largest radio manufacturers, is producing 5,400 all-electric Majectic radio sets and 50,000 tubes daily with earnings running at the rate of $12,000,000 annually.
