1,300 TO TAKE I, U. EXTENSION COURSES HERE Many Students Expected to Enroll in Afternoon, Evening Classes. Afternoon and evening classes of Indiana university’s extension division will have more than 1.300 students when they open Sept. 25, officials predicted today. Increase the number of ad\anced business courses, and addition of anew course on “Live Views of Great Men of Letters” were among reasons ascribed by extender) heads for the increased enrollment. Charts recently prepared showing enrollment figures since 15*20, show that the number of students more than doubled in nine years, while class enrollments have trebled in the same period. Students carry more work than formerly, it is said, because many of those attending classes are preparing for future education in universities. and take all or a part of j their first year’s work at the ex- i tension school. • English courses lead all others in adult interest, the division's recoids indicate, with twenty-four per cent of the total student body enrolled, j Classes in composition work attract J many stenographers and clerks, and ! usually number about 125 students. I Literature draws many advanced students, some of whom are work- j mg for masters’ degree*. Education courses take sixteen per cent of the j enrollment, science thirteen, and ac- j counting more than eight per cent. Other popular courses among the students from seventeen to sixty include public speaking, business law, advertising, journalism, short story writing, art and music appreciation. Greek and Roman mythology and Virgil, algebra, general mathematics. analytic geometry, mathematical theory of investment, physiology, hygiene, romance language's. and political science. Schools so Open Tuesday Hu I inn s SiHcial MARION, Ind., Aug. 30.—Both Grant county and Marion public schools will open Tuesday, according to official announcements.^

WOMAN SELLS TREES Can Not Do Trimming but Sells j Surgery Service. It (/ l imes Special KENT, 0.. Aug. 30.—Every year applications from women ambitious to become tree surgeons are received by the Davey Tree Expert Company, but natural obstacles such as skirts, climbing and high winds cause all of them to be rejected. Mrs. Gertrude A. Farley of Cleveland has just demonstrated that the field can not be kept entirely closed to the fair sex and she has become the first saleswoman of tree surgery in the history of the profession. Mrs. Farley was formerly editor of the National Greenkeeper. She expects to direct her batteries of persuasion principally against golf clubs in an effort to make courses prettier and sportier through the greater use and better care of trees.
