Aviation 30 PILOTS TO COMPETE HERE ON SATURDAY Skill in Handling Planes Will Be Judged; Prizes Are Offered. Thirty airplane pilots from Indianapolis and other Indiana cities will compete in the state-wide flying contest all-day Saturday at the Curtiss-Mars Hill airport. Tests which each pilot will have to pass are sponsored by the Curtiss Firing Service of Indiana and the Solo Club of Indianapolis. Charles E. Cox Jr., assistant general manager of the Curtiss organization. said the contest originally was planned for novice fliers, but this will not bar entrance of experienced pilots. Student fliers and private license pilots have been invited. Tests Are Announced The tests, announced by Cox, are: Negotiation of a 6pot landing after shutting off the motor; a 360-degree turn to a spot landing, and doing figure eights over a line at 500 feet. Each pilot will be judged as to Judgment, skill in handling plane and accuracy. A silver trophy will be awarded the winner and the two pilots winning second and third places will be given helmets and goggles. Will Get Tour ' in addition, the three winners will be given a 500-mile cross-country tour in a four-place plane. During the trip they will receive instructions in map flying and course and a period of time at the controls of the cabin ship. The tests will be conducted under department of commerce rules and every precaution will be taken to make the flights safe. Entrants who come to the field to put on “stunt exhibitions” and consider the tests as a chance to “show off ’ will not be considered. Flier Will Try Again 7?i/ United Press CLEVELAND, Aug. 30— Captain Ira Eaker probably will begin his second transcontinental refueling endurance flight tomorrow at 2 p. m. from New York, United Air Crait and Transport Corporation representatives here announced today. Official permission for the flight is lacking, but the order is expected momentarily. Captain Eaker’s first attempt failed here Wednesday night when a large can of oil broke loose from the refueling ship and crashed through a wing of the endurance plane. He had made the hop from Oakland, Cal., to New York and was returning when the accident occurred. Minor damages to Captain Eaker's ship have been repaired. Mail Picked Up on Fly YOUNGSTOWN, 0., Aug. 30. First test pickup of mail by an air mail pilot has been made here by Pilot Harry Sievers, who flies on the Clifford Ball line between Pittsburgh and Cleveland. Sievers, in his regular mail plane, flew low over Lansdowne field here, let down a cable, hooked into a pickup chute placed on the field, and drew up a dummy sack of mail. He made several pickups, each one successful. On Friday at 3 p. m. the first actual picking up of air mail on the fly will take place here when a pilot of the Ball lines, on his way from Pittsburgh to Cleveland, will get the Youngstown mail without landing. The pickup device was invented by Dr. Lytel S. Adams of Seattle and had been demonstrated throughout the east. Arrivals and Departures Mrs. Zane Grey, wife of the famous sportsman-writer, was a passenger on the T. A. T. plane Utah through here Thursday. M. D. Kirkpatrick, piloting Ruth Elders Swallow, refueled at the Capitol airport Thursday on his return to Los Angeles from Cleveland. A Travelair, piloted by Swede Christofer, refueled at the Hoosier Airport, en route from Wichita, Kan., to the Cleveland air show Passengers were Mrs. C. E. Clark and William Snook. '

THREE STATIONS BROADCAST FAIR WFBM, WKBF, WLS to Carry Reports of Activities. Activities of the Indiana state fair this year will be broadcast over three radio stations, according to Edwin D. Logsdon, president of the Indiana board of agriculture. The three stations are WLS. the Prairie Farmer station at Chicago, WFBM and WKBF, the two Indianapolis stations. This is said to be the most extensive radio hook-up that any state fair in the United States has ever had. The first broadcasting period will be at 2:30 Saturday afternoon and will continue until 3:30 o’clock. Both WLS and WKBF will be on the air, while WFBM will be silent. This is the only period, however, that will not be broadcast by WFBM. The other period Saturday will be from 5 o'clock until 5:30. All three stations will be on the air. Beginning Monday, all three stations will broadcast each day during the week, except Saturday, at the following hours: 11:45 a. m. to 12:15 noon; 2:30 p. m. to 2:55 p. m., and 5:10 p. m. to 6:00. On the noon program, there will be a twelve-minute intermission at some time during the period to permit WLS to broadcast market reports. In the Air Weather conditions at 9:30 a. m.: Southwest wind, six miles an hour; temperature, 72; barometric pressure, 30.24 at sea level; ceiling, unlimited; visibility, six miles; field, good. Actress Delayed Pola Negri, movie star, who was scheduled to pass through Indianapolis today on the Transcontinental Air Transport plane failed to arrive. T. A. T. officials expect the actress to arrive in this city today or Saturday en route to Los Angeles. Attend Air Races Captain H. Weir Cook and Walker E. Winslow. officiaLs of the Curtiss Flying Service of Indiana, are in Cleveland attending the national air races. They will make short tour., in planes on company business following the aviation show. Russian Plane Delayed Bu United Press IRUTSK, Siberia, Aug. 30.—The airplane Land of the Soviets, en route from Moscow to the United States via Siberia and Alaska, was delayed in its departure on the next phase of its journey today due to heavy fogs. It arrived here Thursday. BANDIT VICTIM IMPROVES Condition of Samuel Smith, 39, of 3423 West North street, shot by a bandit in his Emrichsville filling station Tuesday night, was fair today, city hospital attendants said.

FRAT IS GIVEN $50,000 FOR PUPIL LOANS New York Broker Donates to Delta Tau Delta at Convention. Establishment of a $50,000 revolving fund to aid members of the Delta Tau Delta college fraternity who need money to complete educations was announced today at the fraternity’s golden Karnea in the Claypool. The fund was donated by Robert E. McConnell, a Wall street broker and Delta Tau member of New York city. McConnell telegraphed the proffer to officers of the national fraternity. It was accepted. Will Name Committee A committee will be named to administer the fund and provide for students borrowing it. Sophomores, juniors and seniors will be eligible for loans. The fund gives financial aid to members of seventy-four Delta Tau chapters in the nation. McConnell was a member of the 1910 class of Columbia university. Responding to the urge of Stuart McLean, fraternity editor, delegates almost unanimously accepted a ceremony prepared by him to supplant “hell-week,” for two years’ experiment. They witnessed the enactment of the rite at a smoker in the Columbia Club Thursday night. Problems Are Discussed Three groups, which take the place of the usual convention committees, met today to discuss various problems of the organization. Archibald M. Hall, Indianapolis attorney, addressed the delegates at luncheon at the Columbia Club, and the afternoon was devoted to further business discussion. Choice of a city for the next karnea will be made Saturday. Cities bidding are Detroit, Mich.; Seattle, Wash., and Denver, Colo. A special committee reported favorably on recommended revision of the fraternity ritual. The chief attraction of the day was the Golden Karnea ball in the Indiana ballroom. Women guests attended a luncheon-bridge at Woodstock Country Club this afternoon. Further committee reports and election of officers will be taken up Saturday. One-half of Alaska is an inhabitable as Norway. It could sustain a population of 10,000,000.
