Cit ? nifrtf I'r'H* CLEVELAND, Aug. 30.—The long neglected and forgotten birthplace of President James A. Garfield near here has attracted a champion at last. State Senator George H. Bender, after learning of the allotment men and home builders who threaten to put the site beyond possibility of public use as a museum for Garfieldiana. announced he would bring action promptly to have the state of Ohio buy the four acres. “I am sure the state will be anxious to preserve the spot for the public.” said Bender. ‘‘The only memorial to this martyred President wc have is his tomb. Reconstruction of the log cabin on his birthplace could be of much greater historical value than the tomb.” The major part of the original farm already hr b<rn cut into lots and sold. The acres left covers the site o i log cabin in which Garfield v. as born. The cabin was carried away splinter by splinter by souvenir hunters after Garfield was assassinated. The remains of the apple orchard Garfield planted there still stands, though in such shape that considerable work would be required to put it in any shape at all. CLAIM 'SUCKER' PLOT Four Men Are Arrested as Swindle Suspects. Four men alleged to be nationally known gamblers bent on reaping a small fortune from “suckers” attending the Indiana state fair next week, today were held on high bond on vagrancy charges pending investigation. They are W. G. Peoples, Joplin, Mo.; William Tiller. Carthage. Mo.; Henry T. Ballard. Ft. Worth, Tex.;
and Harry Phillips. Indianapolis. Detectives arrested them Thursday after tapping telephone wires and listening in on their alleged plots. They had ordered gambling equipment to be installed in a downtown hall, and boasted that they would "trim the suckers.” according to police.
