EXHIBITS PLACED IN PREPARATION FOR STATE FAIR Thousands of Hoosiers Are Ready for Annual Trek to Fairground. Cows, chickens and horses today were Jumbled with autos, radios, household appliances and the exhibits at the state fairground as the turmoil, preceding the opening of the fair Saturday, was at its height. Thousands upon thousands of Indiana residents and persons living in nearby states will come to the eight-dav fair this year to view, in one area, the progress that has been made in the agricultural, mechanical and commercial fields. Judging of art and needlework was underway today at the woman s building as hundreds of exhibits were examined. Another pre-fair feature at the Woman's building will be the annual dinner for Indiana board of agriculture members and their wives, which will be given Friday night by members of Girls’ Home Economics Club who already are encamped on the grounds. Parade on Tuesday Judges for the annual commercial and industrial parade which will move over downtown streets Tuesday and then to the fairground, were announced today. They are: Mayor L. Ert Slack. Ralph Edgerton and Paul Q. Richey, chamber of commerce president. Preparations also were underway for presentation of the children s circus and pet parade to be held in the coliseum Tuesday night. Fair officials announced that approximately 1,000 entries have been received for the grand circuit races to be held daily, except Sunday, during the fair. Exhibits in Place Friday Indianapolis auto, radio and accessory dealers expect to have all exhibits in place in the Exposition building Friday. Auto displays will fill the center pit and radio and accessory dealers have been allotted space around the sides. A new feature of the agricultural exhibit this year will be the onetenth size model farmhouse in the Agricultural building. The house will be the centerpiece with an array of flowers and fruit grouped on both sides. H. B. Clark, manager of the auto races which will be held Saturday, Sept. 7. arrived today to arrange the entry list and supervise arrangement of the track. Feature of the races will be the 25-mile dirt track race for the Indiana championship.
HOUSEWIVES WARNED TO WATCH PRESERVES 0 Dangers of Botulism are Stressed by National Medical Bodies. By Science Service CHICAGO, Aug. 29.— Housewives, busy running down peaches, string beans, and other seasonable prey for their fruit jars, are warned to be on their guard against the dangers of botulism by the American Medical Association and the American Public Health Association. Since November, 1928. eleven outbreaks of botulism have occurred in this country that have been traced to home canned food. In all, thirty-five cases occurred, of which twenty-one died. 'The frightful mortality of this disease makes extra precautions in canning vegetables and meat extremely advisable. The spores of the organism causing botulism can be killed only by long continued heating, a condition that automatically condemns the cold pack method in favor a few years ago. Ten per cent brine should be used for non-acid vegetables and meats, or else these foods should be boiled for some time after they have been removed from the glass jar in which they have been preserved, according to medical authorities.
