SENATE BLOC’S WRATH TURNED ON FARMBOARD Wheat Raiser Has Been Given No Help, Asserts Nye of Dakota. BY PAUL R. MALLON United Pre* Staff Correspondent WASHINGTON, Aug. 29.—'The senate farm bloc is assembling for the coming session in an irrtated mood, because of failure of President Hoover’s federal farm board to fake care of the wheat farmer. Following announcement of Senator Brookhart find. Rep., la ), that he intended to ask hearings on nominations of board members, Senator Nye <Rep. N. D.), revealed today that he is planning a full inquiry into the fitness of two board members whom he delciried to name. Plan of the farm bloc is to refer President Hoover's board nominations to the agriculture committee when they are sent up from the White House Sept. 4 and then to call the nominees before the committee for examination. “The board has helped the fruit i,\.rmer. but has ignored the wheat farmer,” said Nye. “The northwest v.as expecting some action, because congress had provided sufficient funds, but our people have received no help and there seems to be no prospect of them getting any from this source in the immedaite future. The present wheat situation could have been helped immeasurably if the board had functioned promptly. “I hope something may be done soon, and, if not, congress should know why.” Other members of the bloc have concurred with the views of Brookhart and Nye, and their strength is sufficient under the liberal senate rules to force a perfunctory investigation of the board, even if it does not prevent confirmation of some nominees. The situation was entirely unexpected after the widespread confidence expressed by farm representatives in congress after Mr. Hoover's own announcement of the board personnel.
AGREEMENT LOOMS ON NAVAL PROBLEM Hoover Again Confers with Stimson, Adams on British Proposals. By United Preen WASHINGTON, Aug. 29.—More optimistic over naval conference prospects than at any time since informal exchanges upon the new Hoover “yardstick” began last April, officials today believed agreement between Great Britain and the United States upon a formula for further naval reduction may be achieved within two weeks. President Hoover held a protracted White House conference Wednesday, the second in as many days, with Secretary of State Stimson and Secretary of Navy Adams, in which the first specific proposals of the British government were considered. “The figures are both long and complicated,” Stimson said after the conference. “We probably shall be here for a few more days, but we are making progress.” College to Open Sept. 17 Bm Times Special MTJNCIE, Ind., Aug. 29.—Activities at the Ball State Teachers college here ceased until Sept. 17 with closing of the second summer term.
