REDUCTION IN ! LIGHT, WATER j BILLS URGED City Councilman Asks Steps to Cut Heavy Items in Budget. The city was urged to take steps to obtain lower electric light and water bills today by John F. White, city councilman and south side civic leader. The city budget for 1930 calls for $410,000 for fire protection, the Indianapolis Water Company receiving the money for water mains and fire hydrants. Other water items are charged separately. It was pointed out at the council finance committee budget hearing the fire protection bill is larger than the bill for city street lighting. Street lighting cast for 1930 is estimated at $384,000. “In all probability the city could obtain reductions in water and light rates. I think the entire council would be pleased to see the city obtain reductions if possible,” White said. Mayor L. Ert Slack conferred with Indianapolis Power and Light Company engineers relative to the “excess cable charge” which amounts to about $40,000 annually. Slack asked data as to light rates j and provisions for excess cable rates j in other cities. Works board records show the wa- | ter main and hydrant charge is I jumping about SI,OOO a quarter. The $442,000 requested for 1930 was estimated on the basis of present bills. The first quarter for this year was $105,000 and SIQ£,OOO for the second j quarter. It was estimated the 1930 ex- j penditures will be $109,000, SIIO,OOO, j $lll,OOO and $112,000 for the various periods. City Engineer A. H. Moore ex- j pressed fear over the reduction from | $442,000 to $410,000, declaring it will j block street development projects, j No P**w streets can be laid without water mains and hydrants, Moore j pointed out. There probably will be a deficit next year if the street im- I provement program is continued in | new sections of the city. Water,

light and power budget of $854,000, requested by the board, was cut to $23,000 by the city controller and mayor. The council finance committee will study the park and sanitary budgets tonight, continuing paring of items to bring about a reduction in the proposed $1.17 tax rate for 1930. The budget of the street commissioner was cut about $25,000 and the health board request reduced materially Thursday.
