NEW CATHEDRAL AMAZING IN ITS GOTHICJJEAUTY Even Great Size of Edifice Is Forgotten When One Sees Rare Charm, The Gothic beauty of the new Scottish Rite cathedral outshines its size, even though it is 300 feet long and 135 feet wide, and extends from North to Walnut streets. Above the main entrance is the tower, 212 feet high, which contains the carillon—the largest in America. Near the entrance is the tyler’s room, twenty-eigh* feet •square, showing that every Mason enters the building “on the square.” Walls are finished in travertine marble, with highly carved arches'over the doors. Adorning the upper part of the room is a highly decorated frieze, which harmonizes with the richly decorated beam ceiling. On the east are windows stained with Masonic emblems representing various degrees of the order. The marble floor is a reproduction of the floor in King Solorpon’s temple, with floor emblems of the 14th, 16th, 17th and 32d degrees surrounded by signs of the zodiac. Lounge for Members Four columns support, a sixty-four-* foot square room ceiling in the main lobby, all finished in travertine marble. The woodwork is Russian white oak adorned with beautiful carvings in the upper panels. Bronze lighting fixtures match the bronze statues in this room, which represent on the north the “Spirit of Life” and on the south “Maternal Love.” An eighty-foot square lounge and clubroom has been arranged for members. Carpets here were designed especially for the room, and the center table was imported from Belgium. On the southeast is a rozy library'. The panels in the wainscoting are a flashy w'hite oak and perfectly matched, and arranged In Jacobean period architectural style. One of the largest rooms is the grand salon and ballroom, which is. ninety-four feet square and fortyfive feet high. The ceiling is one of the outstanding pieces of art in this country. The parquetry floor, divided in squares by black walnut strips, is outstanding. A rich silk damask, paneled with guilded moldings, covers the walls. This rom is of the Elizabethan period. Auditorium Seats 1.200 For ritualistic work there is a large auditorium with seating capacity of 1,200. In it is an organ with approximately 5,000 pipes. Concealed above the balcony in the room is an echo organ. The dark fumed oak woodwork shades to a lighter tone as it reaches the ceiling. Panels on the ceilin', are decorated in antique gold. smaller rooms and offices are to be found within the cathedral. All are constructed to harmonize with the perfect whole. Glazed Tile in Edifice Indiana was called on to provide the glazed tile with which the walls of the cathedral's kitchen were finished. Four car loads of this tile came from Brazil.
