First the Gold Fish Are Stolen From Marott, Now the Bird!

WELL, wc still have the paper on the wall." remarked Samuel Kingsbury, manager of the Marott hotel, with irrepressible optimism as he reported the latest theft today. Someone stole the hotel canary out of its cage in the main lobby Thursday night. Six Aveeks ago all the goldfish were seined out of the big pool in the hotel plaza. In the case of the goldfish clew; were left. The thief left a burlap bag he used as a seine. Tuesday dozens of persons saw a school of goldfish swimming in P'all Creek, opposite the hotel, probably thcmissing ones trying to get home. But in the case of the canary, Kinjsbury said there was not even a fingerprint left on the cage. "Anyone seeing a stray canary need not phone the hotel." said Kingsbury. "I don't kno\$ T one canary from another and I 'wouldn't be able to identify ours.” Fish Can Change Color Bn I oiled l‘ns* NEW YORK. 8,173 CLAIMS PAIDJAF.MERS Refunds Given for Taxes on Gasoline. Inriianians and tourists within the stales boundaries spent approximately seven and three-quarters millions of dollar:, for gasoline in July, monthly reports in the state auditor's office indicated today. Refund claims paid to farmers i'or taxes paid on gasoline used for agricultural purposes totaled 8,173, the largest number in the history of the gasoline tax collecting department, according to Leland J. Fishback, collector. The July refunds amounted to $32,232.60. The previous high month was in June, 1928, when 7.930 refunds were made. July refunds in 1928 total 5.675, amounting to $38,914.76. Gasoline consumption in the state for the month iusi ended totaled 38.331.785 gallons, which, at an average price of 20.2 cents a gallon, costs motorists and other users $7,743,020.57, according to unofficial compilation. July consumption was second only to that of the preceding month, when 39.279.683 gallons were used, netting, under the 4-cent tax. the high collection total of $1,571,187.33.

STATE REBATES $1,236 PLATE FEES IN BAY Auto License Refunds Set New Record; Totaled $56,000 Last Year. The state did a record business on returned automobile license plates | Wednesday and paid out $1,236.45, ; William E. Witmer. rebate clerk, announced today alter compiling the figures. Witmer has been in charge ol re- | bates for the last five years and asserted this sum is the largest ever paid out in a single day. The amount was divided as follows : buses $630; passenger cars $401.05; trucks $204.58. and one motorcycle 83 cents. The highest lee paid during the day was $75 on returned bus plates and the lowest the motorcycle. Last year the total returned fees totaled $56,000 and this year's budget for rebates is $60,000. and will be more than exhausted, Witmer predicts. Witmer has signpd 12,724 checks made out by Mrs. Geneva Walker rebate clerk. Payments are made eleven months of the year, each month the plates were in service being counted out in making the deductions. "The lowest rebate check ever paid was 8 cents and the highest for a single month's rebate was $16.67 on bus plates. Five years ago. only about 8,000 were returned tor rebate. Witmer attributes the increase to the taking busses out of service by merging and replacement of lines and to increased trade in automobiles in general. He said Indiana is one. of but a few states that makes rebates and it is lowest in original fees charged. Plates must be returned and forms properly filled out and notarized ; berfor rebate is made. The check is made through the files and the plates are destroyed. ROBIN HERE AUG, 10 Refueling Exhibitions Will Be Given in City.
