Evidences of the easing of the tension bet a eon China and the Soviet Union were seen here today in reports that the Chinese forces at Manchuli. the strategic point near the northwest border between Manchuria and Siberia, had been withdrawn from the first lines pursuant to instructions from Nanking. It was understood the Soviet officials had given similar orders, leaving a twenty-mile gap between the opposing lines. Local members of Kuomintang. staged a huge anti-Soviet mass meeting today, ordering factory managements to give workers a holiday and full pay, while government officials continued their conciliatory attitude and .forecast early settlement of the Chinese Eastern Railroad dispute. The Chinese emissarv. Chu ShaoYang. leaves Tuesday for Mukden to confer with officials there and expects to investigate the situation later at Harbin, the headquarters of the Chinese Eatsern Railway, where the difficulties between the two nations first arose and still centers. He hopes subsequently to open negotiations with the Soviet government officials.
