Holt today indicated he will ask city council approve of a 1930 city tax rate of about $1.16. an increase of 6 cents over the 1329 levy. This preliminary estimate was wade on the fca.-D of figures compiled after department budgets have beer, slashed in conferences with Mayor L. Ert Slack, and is subject to change. It is likely that the city geneial rate will be 65 cents, an increase of 1.5 cents oveer last year, tiut- to a jump In interest on bonds. “If the council can cut the budget any more it is o. k„" Holt commented. Oppose Inrrrase Edward H. Harris, council finance chairman, said no consideration had been given to the budget, but indicated the city fathers will frown on any increa c e. “You ?hou ; d hear the people talk about increases. Down at Cincinnati they are cutting expenses and getting lots for their money," Harris commented. Wholesale reductions in departmental requests have been made by the controller and mayor, but an 8-cent increase in the rate foi sinking funds is required, in addition to the general fund interest jump. Further cuts are expected to be made in several departments if possible. SlOO.Oftfl Item to Be Cut Police Chief Claude M. Worley Bnd Fire Chief Harry E. Voshell have been called conference. Slack said the SIOO,OOO equipment item probably will be cut from Voshell's budget. The mayor said he will ask council for bond issues to build two fire stations if the city fathers favor it, pointing out. the money can be reappropriated next year by the city manager form to obtain funds for equipment. Slack's budget calls for a $40,000 contingency uind to meet emergency expenses under the city manager plan. The general fund requests totaled $5,460,567 before the controller started cutting.

Casing Costs $5,000; Will Be Used by Huge Plane. R,u Timm Riicrinl AKRON, 0., July 26.—1f someone were to say that the world will have use for a standard pneumatic tire towering 12 feet and measuring 4 feet in width, you would be apt to think this someone's imagination had gone astray. Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company has just built such a tire. And the someone we have reference to is none other than a prominent airplane manufacturer. Nothing funny about it, he assured Goodyear officials, the day should come when larger airplanes will need a tire of this size. So Goodyear is pioneering again. The largest tire in the world lias just come out of the factory after being in the process of construction for three months. It is a standard tire in every way, with the exception of size, an All-Weather tread balloon. Weighs 1,800 Pounds Something of the size of this pi ant casing can be gained by the fact that the tire and wheel weigh 1.800 pounds, almost one ton. The tread and wheel weigh 600 pounds each and the inner tube tips the scales at a neat 125 pounds. The tire built under the combined supervision of the chemical, tire design and research divisions of Goodyear’s development department, is mounted on a rim four feet in diameter, thirty inches wide. Sells for 55.000 The valve is the only 'item of standard size in the entire tire. A special vulcanizer was built around the casing to cure the rubber. Otherwise the tire was built under normal operations. Such a casing would sell for a budding fortune —$5,000. It, boasts of a load-carrying

LICENSE JUDGES DRAW NO PAY Deny Martin and Bosson Jr. Will Leave Jobs. State Senator Roscoe Martin, Logansport, and Representative William Bosson Jr., Indianapolis, are not yet drawing their $l5O a month salary as license revocation judges under the new drivers’ license law, it was annunced today by Secretary of State Otto G. Fifield. He refused, however, to declare that they will not take the offices, as previously announced, despite criticism of the appointments and the so-called “make and take'’ opinion from the attorney-general’s office under which they were made possible. Attorney-General James M. Ogden ruled, upon Fifield's request, that members of the legislature, which passed the drivers’ license law. could take the judgeships, but when they do so they are no longer members of the legislature. The Constitution provides that legislators can not take jobs which they created. But Fifield today declared these two will take them “just as soon as we get the law working.’’ Atomic weight is the -weight of an atom of an element as compared with that of an atom of hydrogen.
