HOOVER SHUNS SPOTLISHT ON PERSONAL LIFE Shows Nn Desire to Let His ‘Human Side' Be Better Known. H '/ .-rr-p, y.,r.pni.rr UUn tr> WASHINGTON, July 22 President Herbert Hoover's inability or unwillingnps? to publicize as lie did during the >ar and during his service in the cabinet has given concern to some of his advisers, it was learned today. With congress out of town, except for Sen. for Borah and member- of the senate finance committer the Prr dent's friends feel he ought io ?akc more opportunities to appear before the public in the role of an interesting individual rather than the chief executive of the United Sttaes. The rcraH the success which at‘rncled Calvin Cooiidgc's simple torte* ol his childhood days, his grille to the cirrus, his opinion of bell-bottomed trousers and other trn icl things that please the public. President Hoover, however, has nho" n little desire to let his human ■de become better known. In tact, he is said to have frowned upon r> ; ent disclosures regarding his per■cnai life. The only concession to his advisers’ suggestions was his recent note answering the high chool boys who thanked him for lending the White House possum as a team mascot. The Presidents friends, however, appreciate the value of humanizing anecdotes. Former chief executives have realized that much of their strength with the public rested upon their willingness to step out of their formal and frigid role now and then. Austere and silent as he was Cool id ge was a past master at the art. He found the reaction exceedingly helpful in his various clashes v.itli Congress. The 531 members of House and Senate have little opportunity to strut the nation’s stage In a favorable light, whereas the President has the spotlight to himself. if he will take it. Hoover will not. His press conferences have been empty of romatic or "human interest' material for the ready hands

Hu > nU“< EAST LANSING. Mich. July 22.- Eating things she did not like is the reason given by Miss Helen L. New Fra. for her being chosen girl health champion of southern Michigan at contests held during the eleventh annual Boys" and Girls" 4-H Club week at Michigan State college. Two years ago before she won the health championship at the ninth annual club week, Helen was underweight. But she ate foods according to instructions given her by the nutrition specialist of Michigan State college and soon was able to bring her weight to normal. •'I was told to eat carrots,” the health champion said. “I don’t like them but T ate them because I knew they would help me to become healthy.”
of correspondents. Unless he has some thoughts or facts on governmental questions. Hoover dismisses the group with a mere acknowlecL ment. On such days Coolidge always found something of interest for his interviewers, even though it had nothing to do with current questions. Hoover's reticence now is considered all the more remarkable in view of the fact that he gained the title of "master publicist” in his pre-presidential career. No cabinet member obtained more publicity than Hoover, and his success was often irksome to some of his colleagues. 1,766 Attend Summer School /i?/ Time# Special BLOOMINGTON. Ind.. July 22.
