U.S. ENLARGES FORCES IN WAR ON SMUGGLING Additional Special Agents Are Being Sent Abroad by Government. BY CECIL OWEN t nitfd Pre* staff Correspondent WASHINGTON. July 19 —Special agents of the treasury in Europe and the Orient are being increased for the purpose of preventing smuggling of narcotics and other contraband and also to expand the government's facilities for valuation of foreign merchandise abroad. Additional agents abroad are needed in many European cities and in China, especially, it was said at the treasury, to enlarge the customs bureau's foreign valuation staff and to obtain advance information regarding attempted smuggling operations The seizure at San Francisco recently of 3,000 tins of opium in the baggage of Mr<. King Kao, wife of the Chinese vice-consul there was based on a report from special agents in the Orient. Inasmuch as baggage belonging to representatives of foreign governments never is searched at United States ports unless the customs service has information that smuggling is being attempted, the importance of an adequate foreign staff was demonstrated by the case in which the Chinese woman was Involved. Funds now are available for adding six men to the twenty already stationed in various European cities and the Orient, and more agents are to be employed later as funds are provided by congress, customs bureau officials said. In addition to reports on smuggling which it receives from agents abroad, the treasury has a working agreement with fifteen foreign governments by which this country is notified when large shipments of narcotics are known to be destined for this country.

Coal dealers from Indianapolis and nearby towns visited the Hoosier Brick and Coal Company this week to see in operation a sprayer, reputed to make coal dustless. The sprayer is made by the Hardie Manufacturing Company, Hudson, Mich., and the one at the Hoosier Brick company is the first installation in the city.
