VICTOR BERGER HIT BY STREET CAR; INJURED Ex-Wisconsin Congressman in Critical Condition After Accident. By Vnitei Prrge MILWAUKEE, July 17.—Victor L. Berger, Socialist leader and former congressman, was in a serious condition today in a hospital here after an accident in which he was knocked down by a street car. CHICAGO'S BAN ON DEADLY DAS REFRIGERATORS Three of One Family Added to Death List: Changes Are Ordered. By T n’t'd Prcsf CHICAGO. Julv 17.—City health authorities placed an unofficial ban on gas refrigerators today after three persons were found dead in their apartment, victims apparently of deadly methyl chloride vapor. Manufacturers of the type of refrigerator in the flat where the deaths occurred joined with health authorities In the move, announcing they would cease manufacturing unit? until their safety is established. Crews of men will be set to work removing the lethal gas and substituting sulphur dioxide, more deadly but, carrying a noxious odor. Chloride is odorless. The tragedy which brought on the drastic move was the deaths of Joseph Painter, his wife Mary and their 1-year-old son. Their bodies uere found late Tuesday by a maid. All three succumbed to the gas while asleep. A mouse that had scampered out to nibble crumbs also lay dead on the floor, mute evidence of the deadliness of the gas. The Painter refrigerator is one of fifty in the apartment house system that is operated from a central plant in the basement.

P. as sponsored by President Hoover is preceding slowly in some states and has met stiff opposition in others, according to political leaders from that territory, now in the capital. Postmaster General Brown, intrusted with active supervision of the reorganization, has recognized many of the old elements frowned upon by President. Hoover in his announcement of sweeping changes, southern leaders charge. These point out that the “lily white” groups set up by Horace A. Mann. Hooker’s southern campaign manager, have gone unrecognized by Brown, while veteran politicians have been restored to power. In Georgia the Mann supporters showed their control in several contests. but H. G. Hastings, who was put in charge when Mann was in the good graces of the administration. has not been recognized by the postmaster general. In these two states the situation is quiet, but a showdown is expected scon. Mann's “lily white” policy has been disregarded in these and other states during Brown's control, southerners charge.
