More than forty La Porte women have established themselves as eliI gible for a chapter of the D. A. R. now being organized there. At an alll-day meeting Wednesday at the Bay Tree inn, Mrs. John McFadden, director of the northern district of Indiana, conferred with prospective members concerning their eligibility. Another meeting of the group will be held Aug. 21 at the Bay Tree inn. On Oct. 23 the organization work will be perfected. a tt a The northern district of Indiana has led during the last year in formation of new chapters. Three have been confirmed, Obediah Taylor chapter. Lowell; Margaret Bryant Blaekstone chapter. Hebron, and Timothy Ball chapter, Hammond. Steps were taken last week to organize a chapter at Decatur. Mrs. E. D. Kennery has been appointed organizing regent of a chapter to! be formed, at Angola. a a a Wabash River G. A. R. society, installed at Peru in June, was organized by Miss Mabel Loughran in two and a half months, with a charter membership of twelve and seven applications pending. The shortest time organization was completed previous to this was eight months. a a a William Donaldson chapter. Primary objects of the national soi cieiy are to perpetuate the mem- | ory and spirit of the men and women who achieved American independence; First, by acquisition and protection of historic spots and erection of monuments. Second, by encouragement of historical research in relation to the Revolution and publication of its results. Third, by preservation of documents and relics and of the individual records of Revolutionary soldiers and patriots, and by promotion of celebration of patriotic anniversaries. Fourth, to carry out the injunction of Washington, to promote institutions for the general diffusion of knowledge, affording such advantages a.s shall develop the largest capacity for performing the duties of American citizenship Fifth, to cherish, maintain and extend the institutions of American freedom, to foster true patriotism and love of country, and to aid in securing to mankind the blessings of 1 liberty, are given in relation to the state budget. Tentative suggestions are given for a pageant presonifying budget items to be recommended for ratification at the state conference. The ; proposed budget includes national defense, history.
