in this city with only 14.02 per cent of women's coats returned to one store. Many Hats Returned In the McCall article it is estimated that 25 per cent of the women’s hats sold are returned. A leading store in this city shows but 17.52 per cent returned. While the magazine article averages over 25 per cent of the 1 merchandise purchased as returned j in Baltimore department stores this city shows but 10 per cent. “Our average for June,” said one store manager, "was only 11.62 per cent of the goods purchased placed in stock again through returns.” While the magazine article shows | that stockings are the prize sellers with only 9.7 pei cent brought back the men's furnishing department in one city establishment averages but 5.63 per cent in returned goods.
Men More. Careful Merchants explain that men return less goods than their wives due to a more standardized wearing apparel and fewer color schemes or styles from which to choose. House dresses are returned with more frequency in Indianapolis than any other article with an average of 28.72 per cent. The reason for this high percentage is explained in that women order as high as one-half dozen house dresses to be sent out on ap-
proval. choose tfce dress they wish to keep and return the others. The McCall brief in favor of better buying argues that returning purchases is costly to the store as well as the customer and that out of every dollar spent 12 per cent goes to‘the hiring of employes. The magazine says that fewer returns of goods and buying of articles before 11:30 in the morning will enable stores to give their customers the benefit of the $8,000,000,000 lost in the extra help needed properly to care for unnecessary bookkeeping and rush hours during the selling day. FLEA IS 'DUMB,' SAYSjCIENTIST ‘C.rcus’ Hoax Is Exposed by Professor. Bu United Press HOUSTON, Tex., July 12. Scientific experiments conducted with fleas have proved to Dr. M. A. Stewart, Rice Institute professor, S that fleas are dumb and that flea circuses are fakes. Dr. Stewart is conducting experiments to discover actions of fleas with bubonic bacilli. His explosion of the flea circus hoax came by accident. “The so-called flea trainers provide the intelligence they claim fleas have,” said Dr. Stewart. “They have platinum wires so thin about the fleas’ necks that it

takes microscopes to see them. The trainers attach the free ends of these wires to their fingers. Then they can make them go through their tricks on the stage. “To make them ‘waltz’ they tie two fleas together. It’s the most natural thing in the world for the insects in trying to get away from each other, to skip around the table. That’s the waltz. “Making a flea play a miniature musical instrument is more difficult. They glue the flea to the table on its back and make a noise. With a piece of paper glued to its legs, the flea kicks about trying to
