—Radio — MANY SOURCES OF RADIO GRIEF ON WEST SIDE

Street Car Lines Causing Trouble: Storm Results Still Evident. ' The Times radio interference engineer found many cases cf interference on the west side, around Belmont avenue last nieht. Many fans living in that district have written or called The Times, complaining of trouble in the last two weeks which makes radio reception impossible. From Belmont avenue west to the end of the West Washington street car line, the street car tracks and bound:- were found in poor condition. Every street car running in this section could be heard on The Times radio interference set while parked at least 150 feet off Washington street, this distance giving a fair estimate of just what it would sound like on the radio sets of people living on side streets nearby. Most of the interference which fans reported sounds like a motor running comes from the motor of the air pumps on the street cars, while waiting at the end of the line for the return trip. On every car checked in this section, the air pump could be heard quite a distance when cut on and cut off. This trouble will be reported to the street railway company. Another troublesome interference was found at Belmont and Washington behind the Belmont telephone station. This was from street lighting transformers that, due to the storm a week ago, are not functioning properly. This interference also is being inducted into other lines, such as home service lines in that district, and telephone lines which parallel the same lines that the interference is on. Following the storm, many lines still are down throughout the city. The Indianapolis Power and Light Company has been working its men double shifts to clear trouble, trying in every v.ay to keep lines free from interference, so that the radio public can enjoy good reception. This interference probably will be cleared before the week-end. ANN WANTS $200,000 MORE FOR ■SLANDER'. Files Another Suit Against Wealthy Oi! Burner Magnate, Bv United Press CHICAGO. It's chiefly because Hardinge called her a -gold-digger.” the “poor but honest working girl” admitted after the precipe of her slander suit against the wealthy manufacturer was filed. SET SCIENCE SESSION Conflict in conference dates of the Indiana History Conference and the Academy of Science will be avoided this year, it was pointed out today by Christopher B. Coleman, state historian, in announcing that the history meeting will be at the Claypool Dec. 13-14. The academy meeting will be the previous week-end at Bloomington, the arrangement having been worked out bv a joint committee.

Didn’t ca'ch the name, but it was new. a a a For those who say radio is not reliable a list of stations tuned in at good speaker strength in the short spare of two minutes. These were WMAQ, WLW. WGN, WBBM. KWKB. WENR. WFIW, KYW and KTNT, not including the locals. a a a The University of Kentucky offered an interesting program over WHAS Wednesday night with their salon orchestra. The good part of the feature is that standard selections are played, not a series of college songs and melodics that only an undergraduate could love. a a a In speaking of college songs, though. WMAQ did put on an old favorite Wednesday night, "The Sweetheart of Sigma Chi.” How that organization does get publicity on that song. ana Tire Minstrel Show at WENR at about the midpoint of the evening is a real treat with the quartet, banjoist and the collection of peppy tunes sung and played. a a a The Perfect Circle, Hour Wedensday night was distinguished chiefly by the absence of Charlie Davis. Robert Brown of the WLW staff wooed the mike and after the program went for a ride in The Times interference car. He says it's great stuff. a a a The announcer at KWKH was in a sympathetic mood around 8 o’clock. When heard he was asking for telegrams. It has not been very long since this station had a standing boast on the great number of telegrams sent them. The public knows what it wants.

WKBF has a pleading number in their studio ensemble programs but it certainly is tough on the fellow living within a radius of a mile of the station. It blankets the lower end of the dial. a a a WLW gave this writer a thrill late in the evening when without warning in turning the dial past that station the melody of Schubert’s Song of Love was heard. Everyone must have their favorites you know. a a a Fifteen minutes of good harmony are being offered over WFBM at 815 every evening. If you like harmony tune it in. The “unwashed” baritone, they called him that, at 1 o'clock this morning over this station, gave an example of the right and wrong way to do several things to a song. tt tt tt Signing off until Friday, TWO AIRMEN KILLED Homemade Plane. BRITISH DROP FIGHT TO SAVE CREW OF SUB No Further Attempts to Be Made, Say Nava! Chiefs. | B’l Unit' and Press LONDON, July 11.—The British j submarine H-47, lying at the bottom !of St. George's channel in the ; storm-tossed Irish sea, will be the j permanent tomb of twenty-one ! members of its unlucky crew. ] The British admiralty announced today that it had decided to abandon all further attempts to salvage the vessel. The slender hopes, cherished by naval officials that some miracle might have preserved the lives of the men who were trapped when the submarine collided with the L-12 and went down suddenly in fifty-five fathoms of water, were blasted when rough seas interrupted further rescue work after the position of the boat was located. A lonely buoy bobbed above the submarine tomb today. The naval vessels and tugs, which had rushed from nearby ports when word of the collision was flashed, had retired to i Milford Haven, beaten by the seas in their rescue attempt.

LET SCHOOL AWARDS City Firm Gets Contract for Blind Institution. Service Construction Company, Indianapolis, has been awarded a $277,433 contract to complete the new Indiana school for the blind buildings at College avenue and Seventy-fifth street. Contracts were let by the board of trustees meeting Wednesday afternoon at the old school building, East North street, between Meridian and Pennsylvania streets. Other contracts awarded were to the C. L. Smith Electric Company, $25,380; Freyn Brothers, $55,685 foxheating, $45,901, plumbing. REMODELED IRVINGTON BANK GREETS PUBLIC The Irvington State bank was Washington street, newly remodeled, was formally opened to the public today with open house to visitors during banking hours. Residents of Irvington and the east side who visited the bank received souvenirs from the bank. The newly remodeled banking room has modern bandit-proof fixtures, including glass screens and safety deal trays. Tme Irvington State bank was purchased by the Fletcher Savings and Trust Company in April, 1928. Irwin C. Bertermann, Indianapolis florist, is president.
