July s—The New York Times said today a group of leading American communists is being "detained'’ in Moscow upon orders of the Communist International and may be held there a year. Ben Gitlow. former Socialist assemblyman; Bertram D. Wolfe and John Pepper, also known as Joseph Pogany. Hungarian aide of Bela Kun, are among the leaders detained. They were "invited” to Russia by the International, the Times reports, to help end dissension among communistic factions in New York. Although the Americans may leave the country by declaring their right* as citizens of the United States, they face expulsion from the communistic party if they do so without permission of the Comintern. FIRE LOSSES IN CITY MOUNT TO HIGH FIGURE Tremendous Increase In Last Six Months Shown By Journey. A tremendous increase in Indianapolis’ fire losses in the first six months of 1929 as compared with the first half of 1928 was disclosed today by compilation by The Times. With 400 fewer fires in the sixmonth period this year than last, fire loss for the period has mounted near the total for ail of 1928. cUp to July 1 this year. 1,907 fires in Indianapolis have taken a toll of $1,019,000 in buildings and contents, fire department figures show. In the same period last year, the total of 2,308 fires was $608,266. The twelve-month total for 1928 was $1,266,175, of which $596,794 was for buildings and $669,381 their contents.
