June 28.— The seven great cities of Quivira, sought by the Spanish adventurer Coronado in the sixteenth century, are r.o longer myths. Coronado merely sought 400 years too soon. Not until the twentieth century did the cities spring up. In the f ates of Texas and Oklahoma the : men cities, their inhabitants numbered by the hundred thousands, now adorn the prairie in more . piendor than the dreamer. Coronado, ever pictured. The seven are Houston. Dallas. Fan Antonio, Ft. Worth, Tulsa. Oklahoma City and El Paso. Their sudden rise has been startling. The country as a whole still c. unaware of the influx of population to the southwest. Houston One of Largest One of the largest of the group. Houston, was brought spectacularly before the nation as the seat of the 1928 Democratic party convention. With almost 300.000 people, Houston is rapidly becoming one of the greatest of all southern seaports. Remote from the Gulf of Mexico. Houston's development was accelerated when a ship canal was built the city. \ Vicing for first rank among the • are Dallas and San Antonio. so close in that only the 1930 government figures will be able to establish the leader. Both are approaching the 300,000 mark. Ft. Worth Cattle Center Only thirty miles from Dallas, but the focus of a territory radiating in the opposite direction, is Ft. Worth, rtock market of the southwestern plains. Far to the west, where Texas pierces New Mexico, is the Rio Grande city of El Paso, its skyscrapers rising high above the surrounding desolate wastes. Glance at the camp to the north's* est. There Oklahoma fits itself into the enveloping Texas territory with the two Panhandles welded together. Oklahoma City, Tulsa Rivals Near the center of this state are the rival twins. Oklahoma City and Tulsa, one the state capital, the other the oil capital Their populations are fast approaching the 200.000 mark. Radiating from the seven are dozens of other cities, all larger than usually considered. Texas has twen-ly-two cities between the 20.000 and ICO.OOO mark. Oklahoma has six more. Many are growing so rapidly their relative sizes can not be revealed on the map. In western Texas, the cities of Amarillo. Abilene, Borger. Lubbock, Laredo, and San Angelo were almost unheard of ten years ago. Borger. in fact, did not even exist. It row has well over 20,000 people. Bigger Than Namesake Abilene, named after the railread terminal town in Kansas to which the early Texas cattlemen used to drive their cattle for shipment. is now six times the size oi the Kansas town. On the Texas coast are the shipping centers of Galveston, Beaumont, Port Arthur. Corpus Christi, and Brownsville. To the north are booming inland centers. WATCH OUT~ WHALES! smart Paris dressmakers who furnish the bathing suits for Deauville have plenty of imagination. Shocks Deauville Trouble started recently when a Parisienne stepped out of her bathhouse with her latest Paris creation. Inside of three minutes there was a riot on the beach; inside of ten the photographers had used up all their plates, and inside of an hour there were a dozen exact duplicates of the suit. It really wasn’t a bathing suit at all; it was more like a collection of a dozen bits of cloth held together with golden strands. There were pieces here and there where they could do the most good, and they were kept in place by bands of golden web. The Parisienne protested that she was a fervent devotee of the sun cult and that her anatomy needed plenty of solar contact. But Deauville, which admits backless costumes, side-split trunks and low-cut armholes, seemed to think that bathing suits should be in one piece, or at most two, but certainly not twelve. Indecency Impossible Last year Deauville had a police court case growing out of alleged indecency in beach dress, but the

court ruled that Deauville is Deauville and indecency impossible. The famous beach is little changed this year. There is nothing new. unless it is the new sense of modesty on the part of the beach police. The hotels and casino are already crowded to the doors, and Deauville is still the most expensive and yet the cheapest resort in Europe. It is possible to spend SI,OOO a day there,and yet it is possible to take the cheapest ride in the world a". Deauville. Just a short distance away from the casino where stakes are spoken in millions, is a ferry boat which carries passengers from Deauville to its more prosaic sister beach, Trouville. Before the war the ferry charged one sou a ride, or the equivalent of 1 cent. The same ferry is still there, manipulated by the same two old salts, and the charge is still the same, 1 sou in French copper, w T hich is today worth one-fifth of a cent. That is undoubtedly the cheapest ride in the -world, but you have to spend several hundred dollars a day living at Deauville in order to enjoy it. The principal farm crops produced by. United States farmers have been estimated to be worth $13,000,000,000 annually.
