H.P, FLETCHER, U. S, ENVOY TO ITALY, RESIGNS Ends Long Diplomatic Service Sept. 1: Promotion Hinted. WASHINGTON, June 25—The resignation of Henry p. Fletcher as American ambassador to Italy has been accepted, the United Press learned today. Formal announcement of the Fletcher resignation is expected to be made today or Wednesday. It is understood the resignation will become effective about Sept. 1, at the expiration of a leave of absence to which Fletcher is entitled. Whether Fletcher is in line for some other appointment by Presioent Hoover has not been revealed The resigned ambassador is one of ihe South American experts in the American foreign service. He was chosen by Hoover last autumn to accompany him on the good-will trip to South America as adviser and liason officer between the Hooter party and the state department. Fletcher was born in Greencastle, P.. April 10. 1873. He served with Roosevelt's Rough Riders during the Spanish-American war and after ■ mice in the Philippines entered the foreign service as a secretary of the American legation in Havana. He subsequently served in Peping ; and Lisbon beforp attaining minis- i t.erial rank as American envoy to I Chile in 1909. In 1916 Fletcher became Amort- j ran ambassador to Mexico and in 1921 was appointed undersecretary | of state. Before going to Rome. ; Fletcher was ambassador to Bel- I glum.
