Suicide Is Foolish Act of Coward BY MARTHA LEE When human lives becomes entangled In a maze of circumstances that there seems to be no way out, those involved think immediately of ending things. If no one else will cut the thread that will unravel the tangle, clip a life thread, and there you are. That is why so many suicides are the result of worry and brooding, of too intense concentration upon a problem, or combination of problems that look too big to buck. A vast number of people are of the opinion that a man w’ho commits suicide is very brave. They contend that it takes superhuman courage for a man to willfully cut the thread of his own life. Maybe that’s true, but I doubt it. I contend that suicide is cowardly,

because no intense trouble involves just one individual. It always involves that individual's family, friends and relatives. It does not solve the problem, but merely shifts the burden to other shoulders. It is the brave man who stands by, who does everything in his power to help those he has involved through the muddle, who stays, in the face of disaster and disgrace, because he knows if he does not he will be putting the result of his wrong doing on the shoulders of another. And it is the strong woman who goes forth and does likewise. Take the chap who claims he is tired of living. Baloney, say I. He is probably tired of living the sort of life he had been since he was a babe in swaddling clothes. The idea then, is to find a more agreeable existence. For whatever life is here, it is, after all, life, and that is nothing to be sneezed in the face. cannot see any way but suicide. A young girl writes me this letter: bear Martha Lee: I am so despondent. I really should wait a bit before t write, because I suppose I am not seeing things quite clearly. I was married several years ago to a man I loved with all my heart. He was not an excellent provider, nor not a terribly steady fellow, but I loved him more than I can tell. We had a son. Soon after the boy was born, my husband, for no reason, apparently, left me. I was heart broken, and got so I did not care what happened. I did a lot of very foolish things that have involved my life even more. The mountain of trouble is more than I can bear now. I can see no other way but to end it a l. DESPONDENT. Don't you =ee, my dear, that you would be shifting the burden of your husband’s disinterest and your wrong-doing upon your son? That if you untangle things for yourself, as you think you will, by ending it all. you are only leaving your own child enmeshed in the net? That does not solve the problem at all. Don’t Bea Quitter You must stand by. It is the only decent thing you can do. Put the past behind you, all of it, and devote the rest of your life to seeing that
