on a third prevented it getting under way. The senate patronage investigating committee, of which Senator William E. Brookhart is chairman, will hold hearings in Texas starting next week, during which the attitude of federal officials in that state toward boro r liquor smuggling will be investigated, Brookhart said. The senate Indian investigating committee, which was allowed an additional $15,000 to conduct hearings, will visit Oklahoma and other states starting early in July and will be on the road several weeks. Senator Robert M. La Follette, chairman of the senate manufactures committee, said he had hoped that the senate would adopt the Wheeler resolution providing for a senate investigation of the textile
industry so the inquiry might start this summer. “The resolution could not be called up because of the illness of Senator Frederick Hale, chief opponent of the senate investigation.” La Follette said. He said other senators threatened to vote against it, if action was attempted in Hale’s absence. La Follette said the investigation would have to be postponed until next winter and that much valuable time was being lost. Brookhart and Senator Kenneth D. McKellar will go to Texas, probably Monday night, and open hearings at San Antonio. The inquiry will continue to center around R. B. Creager, Republican leader in that state and what Brookhart call his “autocratic machine.” Border witnesses will be among the first summoned, following which

the hearings will be transferred to Dallas to take testimony regarding the financial activities of the Creager organization.
