FBENCH TROOPS TAKEN CAPTIVE BT TRIBESMEN Foreign Legion in Morocco Rushes to Aid of 66 Held in Atlas Mountains. ! Bu Cuffed Press * PARIS. June 13.—Eight battalions of the French Foreign Legion, mounted and under full marching orders, were hastening across the muddy plateaus of Morocco today in the hope of rescuing three-score comrades from fastnesses of the Atlas mountains, where they are being I held captive by a band of north I African tribesmen. The prisoners were members of a French patrol which was attacked while Attempting pacification Os the district, the natives of which never : had become reconciled fully to the rule of the Europeans. Thirteen of the legionnaires were killed, ten injured and sixty-six missing, the latter detached from the main body of the patrol and taken prisoner by the wild-riding native horsemen. Great fear was felt here for the fate of the prisoners. Among the captives are seven officers of the Foreign Legion and eleven noncommissioned officers. Forty of the captives are white and it* is about these whites that the war ministry is principally concerned. in view of the fact that the Morocco natives are known for their mistreatment and torture of white, Christian prisoners. Latest reports from Rabat indicated that all was quiet in the vicinity of Ait Yacoub, where the battle took place. Reports that the whole countryside was in uprising were unfounded, it was stated. The villagers themselves, though they only recently submitted to French rule, remained passive during the skirmish and refused to side with the attacking band. NORTHERN BAPTISTS TO SURVEY DECADE WORK National Convention Opens Friday in Denver. Bu Times Special DENVER, June 13.—From Maine to southern California, delegates from some 8,000 church and centralized affiliated bodies and state conventions in the Northern Baptist denomination are traveling toward this city for the annual convention which opens in the auditorium here Friday and continues through Wednesday. Especial interest is attached to this year’s convention because of the fact that it will be just ten years ago that the New World movement was launched by Northern Baptists in this city and under the same roof. At that time a tenyear program was launched based upon a survey of Baptist history up to then. This year a second survey will be presented covering the decade just passed, and setting forth in how’ far the goals set ten years ago have been missed or attained.
