WHEAT TAKES SHARP JUMP IN PIT OPENING Prices Continue in Nervous State: Oats Little Changed. | By 1 ,itlr.l CHICAGO. June 7 —Action • of Liverpool in meeting all of Thursday's wheat advance here caused another sharp jump in prices at the i opening today. Wet weather complaints from the winter wheat belt helped make a strong market. Corn ' was up sharply with wheat, but oats ' sold little changed. At the opening wheat was % t-o I%c higher; corn was up % to l'-c, ! and oats were unchanged to Tic higher. Provisions were unchanged ' to a shade higher. Uncertainty as to farm relief news I coming out of Washington and | conditions affecting the progress of i new crop are keeping the wheat | market in a highly nervous state. ! While it is the common opinion that I impending legislation will work for I higher prices, doubt as to the meas- - ure of its success is preventing much buying, except when something new* developed. The southwest is report'd receiving too much rain, unconfirmed reports of rust coming from Kansas. Country offering of corn continues small, farmers apparently feeling the coarse grain will profit, from the passage of farm relief bill. Considerable rain fell in lowa, Illinois and Indiana over night. Houses with eastern connections have been good buyers of July oats, j absorbing the liehf liquidating sales. ißv Thomson A McKinnon* NEW YORK. June 7.—Although the possibility of unusual tightness in the money market this month has probably been removed while the government's refinancing program is under way, recent intimations that the federal reserve board had reversed or modified its credit policy, are not borne out by the weekly statement. Obviously the improvement in the money market can only be attributed to liquidation. Furthermore, it is spmewhat discouraging to find the government paying an unusually high interest rate for maturing obligations, indicating that a return to more normal interest rates is not anticipated for some little time. Temporarily, however we think the credit question may be disregarded in favor of other developments coming to hand. Record breaking earnings of the railroads, as well as the operations of all basic industries, continue to furnish evidence of the prosperous condition of the country, and assure most satisfactory earnings well into the third quarter. The rails, we believe, are particularly worthy of careful consideration at this time and plans under way for mergers in various industries should receive more attention froh the investor.
