The biscuit-flattener is known on Harris avenue and other neighborhoods in which Mrs. Meek has lived a. "And do you know' when I lend it to my neighbors I've always gotten it back—and without scars—except the time a youngster tried to use it to hammer nails,” she exclaimed. WORK RESIGNS AS NATIONAL G. 0. P. CHIEF Quits as Chairman After 45-Minute Conference at White House. BY LAWRENCE SULLIVAN I nited Press Staff Correspondent WASHINGTON. June s.—Sweltering in the legislative toils of immigration. tariff and debenture, political Washington turned its flagged energies today to the selection of a new chairman for the Republican national committee. The resignation of Dr. Hubert Work, former secretary of interior, followed a forty-five-minute White House conference between President Hoover and Work. Although Work’s resignation has been imminent since March 4, it was not expected in political circles until a successor had been named. Work was the first member of President Calvin Coolidge’s cabinet openly to indorse the candidacy of Herbert Hoover in the pre-conven-tion campaign of 1928. Work generally is regarded as having contributed as much as any other one individual to Hoover’s nomination. In his letter acknowledging Work’s resignation, President Hoover lauded the conduct of the 1928 campaign. So far as the President’s letter indicates. Work relinquishes his post. effective immediately, a scholarly interpretation of Work’s letter to the national committee, on the other hand, suggests the party leadership will not change until fall. Work has not been active since the campaign. He went to his home in Pueblo, Colo., in March, and later took a vacation in Europe, from which he returned recently.
