BERKELL'S WINNER NOW AT ENGLISH’S Stock Players Give Most Satisfactory Performance of Season in "The Noose” by Willard Mack. BV WALTER D. HICKMAN. yc are going to hear this week a lot of talk about the good theater X that is on view at English's this week. The general verdict, and my own as well is that the Berkell players at. English's are giving the best all-round perf irmance of the season in "The Noose.'' In thf first place, this play was written by Willard Mack, a man who knows how to write a play with real characters. It is my opinion that these players have united in a fine effort to put over a successful drama on the road scale basis, but at Berkell's prires in stock.
The set used in Governor Bancrofts home for two acts is as complete and as satisfactory as one would expert in the legitimate season. The outstanding piece of work this week is done by James Blaine
as John Bancroft, the Governor. Biaine has drawn the characterization in a fine manner and he feeds well the others in the big dramatic scenes of the drama. He is well poised, looks the part and gives one the impression of real sincerity to be expected in a man who is the Governor of a great state. He is able

tn create q splendid emotional suspense as he decides whether to spare the life ol a young criminal who *•• condemned to die on the gallows. I ran say that Blaine is doing his best work of the season in The Noose." Thus piay brings hack to the Becked Havers Robert St. Clair. He nia; the role of Nickie Elkins, the chap who is headed for the gallows. St. Clair is at his best in the first and third acts. In these acts he is doing a fine, honest piece of acting SO r.s to reveal the troubled soul of the criminal who killed a man and then would not, state his reason except to say that the victim "w as no good.'' [t is in the second act, that T think St. Clair is o>tt of character in making a dress suit swell out of Nickic. A little of the honest impression made by St. Clair in the first act is damaged to a certain extent because of the tailored made appearance of Nickic. The fact is that all of those, with the exception of Tom Pawley in the second act. have dressed the character too nicely. This place is a joint, not a night club. It’s a barn, a rough place. This is minor, only a detail and does not detract too severely from the otherwise fine general conception. St. Clair has improved in his art. as he gives a fine, sustained char-
burn. Dr. Scholl’s Zino-pad* won’t harm the tenderest skin. Small, thin, dainty, cushioning, guaranteed safe and sure. Won’t come off in bath. Doctors recommend them. At all drug, shoe and dept, stores- 35 cents. Dl Scholl's Zino-pads Put one on— die pain it gonei
acterization in the first and third acts. Mildred Hastings in a souse part about walks away with the second act. Robert Blakeslee makes a. good human secretary to the Governor. Miss Mary Louise Walker gets the right slant on the Governor's wife, who has a. past that her husband does not know. Her emotional work is not overdone, but most effective Thore are many others in the cast. The scenic part of the show is excellent e T think you will agree with me that "The Noose" is a $3 show : at Berkel! prices. It is ray own verdict that this production on the whole is the most satisfactory that Berkell has given us in any season that he has been here. It is a beautiful performance on the whole. At English's all week. nan RIGHT KFVH OF VARIETY AT THE LYRIC I believe I am right, when T tell you that the vaudeville at (he Lyric this week is right.

Would you go into a store today and buy milk right out of an open can? Certainly not. Well, then, why go into a store and buy zugar in hulk? You can't even be sure it is cane sugar. You can't be sure it was properly refined. You can't be sure it hasn't collected dust and dirt. But if you buy Jack Frost Sugar, packed for protection in the Blue Box, then you know you arc getting 100% pure canc sugar, sugar which no human hand has touched in the refining process. Although it runs to hokum, there is enough difference in the brand to give you a well rounded bill of fun. I can't help it. but I have a weakness for Blanche and Jimmie Creighton in "Mud-Town Vaudeville.” I have seen them many times and I never tire of them. They are showmen and they work every minute to give legitimate fun. They are entertainers of long standing and they are approaching that station in their entertainment life that they are becoming a variety institution. And there are few of them in vaudeville today. The. Creightons are giving us real vaudeville and I admire them for keeping their individual standard of fun. To me they are among the ten funniest acts I have ever seen. I- have said that before in this department. And so that is nothing new. "The Rookie" has the services of Hooper and Gatchett. It starts off as a sketch in the World war. then gets rather loose as to comedy and ends in a musical atmosphere. It is the comedian of the act that makes it the wow that, it is. If you like classy modem dancing, including tap dancing and a dance burlesque upon a. prize fight of the future, then you will love the dance offering of Louise and A1 Burdack. This couple possesses that great quality known as personality and they back up that with genuine dancing talent. Here is a dancing act that is a dancing act,.
