ELLIOTT AYRES' DEATH BAFFLES FLORfDAPOLICE Ex-City Manufacturer Is Found Shot in Car on Tampa Road. Whether Elliott Ayres, 48. former Indianapolis manufacturar and writer, committed suicide or was murdered as he sat in his automobile parked at the side of the highway near Tampa, Fla., was the mystery confronting authorities in the Florida city today, according to a dispatch, A passing motorist found Ayres’ body, a bullet wound through the heart and powder burns on his shirt, slumped in the front seat of his car Thursday afternoon, dispatches said. Finding a .25-caliber automatic pistol at his side with one cartridge exploded, police at first regarded the case as suicide. Later, however, they found a second empty cartridge on the ground at the side of the car. and a bloodstained paper bag in a closed valise in the rear of the sedan. SIO.OOO Bond on Body The murder theory again was discounted when an interest coupon of a SIO,OOO Liberty bond and $45 was found & Ayres clothing. A coroner's jury has been impaneled. but will defer an inquest until after further investigation, dispatches said. Ayres returned from Indianapolis to his winter home in St. Petersburg Wednesday and set out Thursday on a fishing tour. Son of Judge Ayres was the son of the late A. C. Ayres, former Marion circuit judge, and brother of Frank C. Ayres, 4903 Washington boulevard; Henry Lee Ayres, 169 West Fortyfourth street, and Miss Mabel Ayres, 502 Highland drive, No. 3. Educated in Indianapolis public schools, Ayres attended Butier university, but abandoned his course when he suffered a nervous breakdown. He resided here until eight years ago, was a manufacturer of electrical devices and a contributor to magazines on outdoor topics. HONOR VETERAN GUARD Retiring after forty-eight years' service with the Pennsylvania railroad. David Texton. 68, of 432 South Ritter avenue, veteran crossing watchman, was given a farewell party and reception Thursday at the Union station by fellow employes. Texton has worked for the railroad company since 1881. He began aas track laborer and worked up to track foreman. Failing health in 1922 forced him to accept lighter work. He was a crossing watchman at Ritter avenue.
