ARMY OFFICERS PLAN DEFENSE IN GASSED CITY Say Attack Is Unlikely in Modern Warfare; Use Cleveland Example. BY RODNEY DUTCHER NEA Service Writer (Copyright. 1523. NEA Service. Tnc.) WASHINGTON. May 24.—1f any future war a large city subjected to a poison gas attack will be able to defend itself. It will be far from helpless. High officers of the United States army do not anticipate that any nation will undertake to reproduce in a peaceful city the conditions which gassed and killed so many persons in the Cleveland Clinic the other day. They do not believe such an aim could possibly be achieved and they do not believe such a major military effort would be justified by the results. Nevertheless, it might conceivably happen. A gas attack might some day be launched against an unevacuated city outside the fighting zone. In time of war, the city itself could make these preparations: How to Meet Crisis People would be warned to go to the higher floors, close doors and v indovs. stuff cracks, put out fires ?no dose up any air intakes. Gas-proof shelters would be established. The fire department would be ready to flush streets. Emergency bathing and first-aid stations would be established for prompt bathing and treatment of the gassed. Surplus w ar and emergency masks would be provided for men who must remain at their pots, such as firemen and power plant operators. Must Excavate at Once Instructions would be published directing people, to leave gassed areas quickly. Complete regulation and control of citizens would be established for their protection. An alarm system would be devised to give warning of an approaching attack and authentic information about gas would be published. Officers of the army’s chemical
