wheel of his automobile Wednesday, beaten pnd shot to death. He had been working overtime, hunting clews to an extortion gang that last week murdered detective Lawrence Martin when he posed as a blackmail victim in an effort to trap the ring. Six suspects were questioned at detective headquarters today, but little information was obtained. It was established' that the detective was killed in a saloon near the alley in which he was found. Signs of a fight and many bullet holes in the wails attested that Sullivan had fought his assassins before they killed him. A police lieutenant tvas beaten severely in the same saloon two weeks ago. Sullivan was a friend of this officer and one theory w r as that he had gone to the saloon to avenge his friend. It also was believed Sullivan may have been lured to the saloon because of his work in several gangster shootings recently. He had been investigating the St. Valentine's day massacre and he may have “known too much.” Elmo Clark and Dicky Quan, em-

Cynthia: My reputation for knowing furniture is increasing. Lois asked me to go with her to the H. LAUTER COMPANY. You notice I did not say to help her choose. She has ideas of her own and mixes colors with a daring that takes away your breath; but the results are stunning. She chose for her living room a black mohair davenport with bright reverse cushions, a Coxwell chair with art noderne covering and a green damask chair that goes with it like a breeze, and a pale yellow painted nest of tables that are so lovely they need not be useful and so useful that they could be only half as beautiful without losing their charm.
