AUTO PLANTS KEEP AT HIGH OUTPUT MARK Records Go by the Board in Feverish Rush of Early May. DETROIT, May 22.—A1l large auto makers in the Detroit district i< port increases in exports this year ranging from 20 to 72 per cent. Last ' ear exports grew to about 20 per cent ot production. Alfred Reeves, general manager oi ihe National Automobile Chamber ,1 Commerce, who was in Detroit a few days ago, believes they will continue to make substantial gains. While figures are not available, it generally conceded by manufacturers that production records were mashed by practically every automobile plant in Detroit during the first fifteen days in May. Cadillac, Ford, Hudson-Essex, Chr\ sler. Chevrlet, Graham-Paige, Oakland-Pontiac. Buick and other 'urge producers are keeping up their eputations this year for large output. Ford re; istrations. especially show .ncreases at all key points in the country luring March and April. Sh'pments Make Record Record shipments of 118,222 Oakland and Pontiac sixes during the. first ! ,ir months of 1929 more than doubled the total in the same period : 1927 and bettered the 1928 period by 15,591 cars. Willys-Overland achieved the greatest April sales record in its history with a total aloof 40.243 Whippets and WillysKnights. Nash shipments to Canadian distributers in April reached the highest volume for a single month in •hr history oi the company. Marmon Going Big With orders oT 7.287 car for shipment in May. Marmon expects this month to better the. record total ot *>.029 Marmon and Roosevelt sales established in April. Incidentally the 10.000 th Roo.scvclct came ofT the line at, Indianapolis last Wednesday. Sales of Stearn.s-Knight during tne first fom months of this year more than doubled shipments in the corresponding period last year. BUICK BUILDS NEW SIX Car Named Marquette Will Be in Medium Price Class. The new Marquette six, shortly to be placed on the market, has been designed and will be exclusively built by the Buick division of Genr.al Motors. The motor and most of the mechanical parts of the new t ; r will be made in the Buick plant, it Flint, Mich., where preparations have been in progress since December. The Marquette will be priced In :ho medium field and will be distributed and serviced through the Buick organization. Official announcement. of the date of its in- ' induction is to be made in the near future. DRIVES REO 3.600 MILES Averages forty Miles an Hour; ( overs 471 Miles in One Day. Sergeant F. H. Nichols, parachute inventor, recently drove a Reo Flying Cloud coupe 3,640 - miles from Brooks field, Texas, to Daytom 0., and return, average more than forty miles an hour through, rain, mud and storm.
