French Lick Jammed for Derby Event By motor car, train, and airplane, the population of French Lick Springs hotel rushed to Churchill Downs, Louisville, this morning to see the running of the Kentucky derby. This crowd, colorful and excited, came from all parts of the coun f ry, Indiana being well represented The return to French Lick Springs of this racing caravan will be after the derby is run or the final race is over for tonight’s festivities. The ball, annual affair, coupled with the derby season, was held Friday night. Not only at the hotel, this week have elaborate dinners and parties l been arranged, but also at the clubs about French Lick Springs, including the Gold and Country Club, the Gorge inn. the Elite Club, and the Hoosler Club. Mayor Walker Present Mayor James Walker, with his retinue of friends and followers, is scheduled to come up Sunday from Louisville for a stay. Mayor Walker will be in the center of much of the activity of Derby Saturday. Among Indianapolis people here for the derby season, most of whom were among those who went to Churchill Downs this morning, are Mr. and Mrs. Clarence R. Rhodes, Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Carlin, Bernard Kirschbaum, Mr. and Mrs. Bernie Lehman, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Mossier. Mr. and Mrs, David Lurvey, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin S. Cohen and Dr. J W. Wright. Mr. and Mrs. Frank S. Fishback Jr., who were here for a stay with Mrs. W. W. Carter, returned to Indianapolis. Mr. and Mrs. Boyd Gurley and Captain H. Weir Cook, Indianapolis, came to the Springs last week-end by airplane. Mrs. Charles H. Anthony. Muncie and Indianapolis, is at the Springs for her annual May vacation. Derby Racer's Owner Here Baron Long. San Diego, formerly of Ft. Wayne, Franklin and Greencastle. has been at the Springs with Mrs. Long. The house was decorated with spring flowers. At serving time a pink basket tied with a large pink tulle bow, holding the gifts, was used as a centerpiece. Camp folders have been sent to every registered Girl Scout. Girls not receiving them are asked to notify the office, and they will re- j ceive them. Girls invested as tenderfeet during the last week are: Troop 22, Suzane McNeill. Betty Jane Rice; Troop 28. Margaret Peters. Dorothy Springer; Troop 34. June Gastineau, Rosemary Hern. Betty Voll, Margaret Cook; Troop 13, Margaret; Setty. Troop 42 had a picnic supper at Camp Dellwood Friday. The girls of Troop 14 enjoyed a play. “Why the Rubbish?” at the last meeting. Refreshments were served. Troops 8 and 8A had a hike at Brendenwood last Saturday in honor of Troop 8. which sold the most cookies and won the cake offered by the Century Biscuit Company. A miniature rally was held, with competitions between the two troops. Prizes were awarded the patrols in each troop which sold the most cookies. Troop 22 hiked to Dellwood Saturday. Frances Stalker and Jane Crawford were in charge. Troop 39 entertained the winning patrol in the cookie contest with a banquet. Troop 24 had a Mother's day program. given by the patrol leaders and corporals. New candidates reported this'week are: Troop BA. Jane Turner; Troop 28. Martha Moore, Bernice Moore, Anna Beck. Virginia Boys. Troops that have not yet received their copies of the Salute should call* for them as soon as possible. Don't forget!
