This Is the time ot the year when a bit of the old world seems to leap the Atlantic and settle for a brief spell in California. From now until July or thereabouts the thousands of Portuguese and Azorians in this state will return thanks to the Holy Ghost because many years ago he interceded and saved a race from starvation. Sometimes the celebration is called that of -the Pentecost and frequently it is referred to as a pageant to the Holy Ghost, but always the periods of festivity are religious in nature, forming a bit of Catholicism distinct, to the Portuguese people. In the fertile valleys of California there are many settlements of Portuguese, most of them being Azorians. LEGION PLANS FOOTBALL GAME East-West Contest Slated in December. An east versus west national football game will be staged by the American Legion next December in either New York or Chicago, according to plans made today by the Legion national executive committee at national headquarters. Proceeds of the game will be used for veteran rehibilitation work. The plan calls for the selection ot the best university team of the west or middle-west and selection of an eastern team to play. If this is not feasible outstanding stars of the west and middlewest will be pitted against a team composed of eastern football stars.
