Ia , May 17 —High school orchestra?, from over the nation were here today *o vie with one another for a national championship This morning the young musicians tuned up them instruments and wen? into hurried la t minute rehearsal: for the big test. The contest, sponsored by the National Bureau tor the Advancement of Music, is being held at the Univer--ity o: iowa. Entries are divided into A and B class* ', depending on the size I of the - hool they represent. Those who were made eligible for the contest were first and second! place winner in : ? a f e or recognized sectional contests, three-time winners of state contests who may have I failed to place in this year's state j competitions, and orchestras from states which did not hold elimina- I tions. The latter class wall be given j elimination trial' here today before j the finals get underway. Each orchestra will play two selec- I tions. one an assigned composition, j and the second one selected from a j list of twenty. A silver bronze trophy, perman- j ent possession of which will be se- j rurecl by an orchestra winning first i place three times, will go to the j Class A orchestra winning first place. Seventy-Five Expected to Compete in Police Circus Event. Seventy-live entrants in the pet parade to be held May 25 in connection with the second annual Police and Firemen's circus were expected today by Police Lieutenant Eugene Shine. More than twenty entries have been filed. Children who desire to enter their pets may obtain blanks from Shine at police headquarters or from circus headquarters, 23 North Pennsylvania street. One of the novel entrans is that of Edna Lorraine Harmon. 10, of 403 West Thirtieth street, who entered her pet fox terrier, Billy, and Pete, a white bunny. Three loving cups, circus tickets and Riverside park passes will be awarded as prizes. Lieutenant Bernard Lynch arranged for complimentary Riverside amusement tickets through Archie Coulter, Riverside manager.

Since prohibition there has been a con- ! tinuous increase in the number of patients, insane from excessive use !of alcohoi, admitted for the first time to the hospitals in New York state, Dr. William C. Garvin, medij cal superintendent of the Binghamton, N. Y., state hospital, declared today before the American Psy- , chiatric Association The lowest admission rate occurred in the year : ending June 30, 1920, the year proi hibition went into effect. The peak I was reached in 1927. Dr. Garvin also stated that the patients entering recently have been more acutely ill than were those j coming to the hospital before pro- | hibition. He said that patients, owing to the character and quantity of the liquor imbibed, appear more poisoned; here is a greater degree of prostration than formerly; confusion of the mind is more often present, and patients are more often delerious.
