Froebel of Gary Favorite in State High School Track Meet Saturday

Diegfil and .Top Turo<*sa. remained in competition todav at the end of the fpcond round of the Yorkshire Evening News professional golf tournament. Dtegp] survived the second round bv showing some of the greatest golf of the tournament to eliminate his fellow countryman. Ed Dudley. 5 and 4 He shot a, 30 on the first nine holes, breaking the course record. Turnesa also eliminated a fellow American. Horton Smith, bv a 3 and 2 margin to reach the quarterfinal round. It was Diegel j, fine putting that cut. his score to the bone. Turnesa s putting also paved the way for his victory over Smith, although he was not as spectacular on the greens as Diegel. The luck of the draw forced three of the Americans out of play. Diegel and A1 Watrous. who tied for second medal honors, met in the first round. Diegel winning. 1 up. George Duncan scored the only victory of th day for England over an American, stopping V/alter Hagen, one up. in one of the greatest matches ever seen here. Hagen scored a 63 for the eighteen holes, but Duncan countered with a 68, winning with his final putt. Duncan climaxed a thrilling round in which the two stars battled for seventeen holes on a nearly even rating, by sinking a sixty-foot putt on the eighteenth green for a birdie three to win the watch. The two rivals drove and approached stroke for stroke. Duncan scoring his victory on the greens. On the sixth he sang a thirty-foot putt, sending the ball uphill over the undulating green to the cup for an eagle two. In the quarter final round Friday Diegel will meet. C. A. Whitcombe and Turnesa will fare J. .1. Taylor. The other matches opposes Duncan and W. H. Davies and Archie Compsfon and Herbert Jolly.

Froebel of Gary is regarded as a heavy favorite to retain its laurels in the state high school track and field championships which will be staged at Tech field Saturday. Preliminary trials will be held at 10 in the morning, with the finals contenders taking part in the events which start at 1:30. Eieven events and the half and mile relays are scheduled to be run off. Coxie beat Willie Cecil of Louisville here recently and exhibited improved boxing skill and hitting power. The lacing Jones gave Lon Lovelace in a March Armory show is well remembered. Tony Herrera, flashy Mexican, will arrive in Indianapolis Saturday to finish training for his tenrounder with Jimmie Hackley, topping next week’s program. Chick Suggs, Armando Santiago. Joie Williams, Jimmy Watts. Frankie Fink, Henry Perlick and Chris Newton are numbered among Herrera’s victims. It looks like another tough spot for Hackley.
