JEER WILSON IN DRY DEBATE WITH DARROW Baltimore Crowd Heckles Methodist Leader; Laugh at Arguments. BY KENNETH G. CRAWFORD I'nited Press Staff Correspondent BALTIMORE, Md . May 14.—Baltimore still is one of the country’s vet strongholds, if the demonstration of a large audience which heard a prohibition debate here Monday night between Clarence Darrow, noted attorney, and Dr. Clarence Tiue Wilson, executive secretary of the Methodist board of prohibition, temperance and public morals reflected the sentiments of the city at large. Wilson frequently was jeered and heckled during his arguments for prohibition while Darrow’s attack on the dry produced only lusty ovations. "This is the city that embarrassed President Lincoln by interfering with the movement of Union soldiers. It is no compliment.” The burden of Wilson's argument Was that while prohibition has not brought complete abolition of the liquor traffic, it has taken the government out of the liquor business, contributed toward national prosperity, eliminated the saloon, cleaned up politics and attracted to public life a higher type of politician. “I never have smelled liquor on the breath of a congressman since prohibition,” he said. Another uproar greeted this remark and Wilson pleaded for a fair hearing. Jeers ‘Methodist. Vatican’ "The reason Mr. Wilson has never smelled liquor on a congressman is because he has a one-track nose,” said Darrow in answer to the statement. Pleading his side of the question with characteristic sarcasm, Darrow repeatedly referred to the Wilson's Washington headquarters as the
