produce one—if I could get Chaplin , to play Hamlet. And if I am allowed to produce a play in America next season I want to do it in a vast theater and on a large stage.” At. this juncture he went over to his phonogiaph. turned it on and at. down. The opus was “I Can t Give You Anything But Love. Ba-Ha-Hay-Be." The blare of jazz rcnied to inspire the producer. Wouldn't it be great to produce Hamlet’ witn a record like that plat.ng through the tragedy?” he asked. •How would I produce ‘Hamlet?’ Hamlet, you know, suffered from excessive imagination. His imagination led him on. And why do producers fail to understand the undercurrent of sex in this tragedy? “Excessive imagination and the powerful drama of sex—l would deign my tage accordingly. I would like to produce all the plays of Shakespeare in America. •The theater has declined in the past twenty years. I don't know' how to explain the decline. Perhaps oineihinrr new is needed to save the tage from the decline. Why doesn't orne American magnato try something different? * “Hamlet with Chaplin aceoinnanieri by good jazz music!"
