DETROIT POLICE FREED OF RUM PLOT BY JURY Federal Investigators Drop Belle Isle Smuggling Charges. B„ cnitPrett DETROIT. Mich, May 10.—After three weeks investigation, the fed- j eral grand jury now in session, today reported It found “no sufficient substantial evidence upon which to predicate any indictments for vio- j lation of any federal law" in con- j ncction with the Belle Isle police i department liquor smuggiinz scandal which resulted in dismissal of one police officer from the Detroit police force and suspension of Captain Joseph A. Burkheiser. Prominent social officials and j business men have appeared before ; the grand jury which investigated j reports ihat Burkheiser allowed the exclusive Detroit Yacht Club har- j tor to be used as a landing place ; for Canadian rum runners. ' Judge Charles C. Simmons made ' no comment on the finding, but j thanked the jurors for their work. Sergeant Edward Shaw, who was j said to be Burkheiser’s chief aide, was discharged fro#i the police de- i partment for his alleged part in the smuggling. SAND COMPANIES MERGE fourteen Independents Form New 51.500,000 Corporation.
