Alice Buckman, 'Gate Attraction’ of lowa H. S. Baseball, to Graduate All Is Gloom in Hawkeye State for Girl Who ‘Packs 'Em In’ Is Due to Go.

! Bit United PrrA* GRISWOLD. la., May 10.—What Babe Ruth is to the New York Yankees, Alice Buckman is to the Griswold high school baseball team —a drawing card that "packs ’em in" and swells the treasury. But there is gloom in the Griswold camp at that, because Alice will be graduated this year. Widespread publicity last year, after someone found her playing on the team, had made the Griswold team much sought after, the regular schedule being augmented by exhibition games this year. And the school athletic funds have mounted in direct ratio to the girl star’s popularity. Alice is 17 and holds her position cn the team through merit, having cinched her berth long before the world found out about her ability on the diamond. This week she and her teammates played a double-header with the Adair high school teaming, winning both games, 3 to 2 and 4 to 2. In the two games Miss Buckman. who is leadoff "man," was up eight times and got four hits. She also figured in two double plays from center field, one of her throws cutting down a runner at the plate, who tried to score on a long fly. This year Alice is going better than ever, according to Bill Morrison. her coach. Her batting average thus far is about .350 and she is

fielding her position in much better form. The thought that this is Alice's last season saddens the school treasurer, for her name has been to the box office in western lowa high school parks what Babe Ruth's is in the majors. Bulldogs Ready for Meiji Nine The Butler baseball team today was to go through a stiff practice session in preparation for its contest with the Meiji university nine of Japan at Washington park Saturday afternoop at 3. The Bulldogs Thursday defeated the N. A. G. U. nine. 8 to 2. at Riverside park. Red Fromuth was on the mound for the Butlerites and held the N. A. G. U. squad to five hits.
