Wife Should Be Allowed to Hold Job BV MARTHA LEE When woman entered the buiincss world seriously, she threw a monkey wrench into the machinery of marriage as it had been placidly more or less and as much a., could la expected,' revolving lor gencra- ' ions. Changes have \akcn place rapidly in the las? ten years. And regardless of what the change may be. every one says “it is because of the war." Which is. I believe, true. Standards have changed decidedly since the World war. Women who previous to that time never would have smoked a cigaret in the most private boudoir ever built, think nothing ol lighting up in the restaurants, theater lobbies, at parties, teas and concerts. The reason that women who moke no longer are looked upon as branded humanity. II a woman ants to smoke, it s perfectly O. K. with the rest of the world. If she "ant; to wear her skirts short, no

My Dear Cynthia: Did you know that ice boxes are a subject for the lecture platform .' I went out to the H. LATTER COMPANY and saw their new line of boxes and the salesman told me all about them. 1 know all about air circulation and cork lining and air chambers and everything that makes the difference between a good and a poor box. You’d be surprised to know that the average box A no more than a box with a piece of ice in it. These /boxes look the >ame as any other box. but they have been s •iemitieall' made and tested, so that ,'ou know just how long your ice should last and what temperature your box will be. It was a real education. Marie The H. LAUTER COMPANY West Washington and Harding Streets Open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday Evenings BElmont 1693
one is under the impression that she is a fallen creature. Before the war. however, a woman who exposed an ankle to the public gaze, almost was branded as a trollop. War Changed All The same thing has happened in the business world. If a woman va forced, through necessity, to add •o the bank account, she had about tv o choices. She could wash clothes or hire out by the day to do housework. Young girls could clerk and work in factories, but a married ".oman had a pretty tough time of it. When the men of the country left to fight, all the positions they had held were left vacant. They had to be filled. And the women took them. They not only did that, but they proved their worth And they have been allowed to stay. Some men still object to their wives working after marriage. Let us see what this one wife has had to face. !>ar Miss Lr I have bevn married almost a • ear. Before my marriage I was emplovcd at a mo.-t interesting Job. When I married, my husband, of course, made m- El"e up my '■ ork. That vas fine for the first fetv months. ha no that I feel weighted dom with Indolence And my husband absolutely and definitely has refused to allow me to work. It is not because he does not give me cvrjythlne I want and need. He doe . It la not that I want to swell the bank account or add to the wardrobe. It is because I want something to do lam burning out energy with inertia that could b< usee to such good advantage. What do you suggest that I do about it? Most of the confusion existing in marriage today arises from the inability of men and women to adjust themselves to the psychological differences caused by the wife's exit irom the kitchen and her entry into the business world. For many women nov-a-days, regular work outside the home is a psychological necessity. Making a home is a marvelous job. But some women can not find the outlet for their creative instincts in running the vaccum cleaner and turning on the electric washer every morning. A job does much toward filling that need. It's Case of Pride Your husband's pride, his cringing from what people will say. is what makes him so insistent that you shall not work. That again is foolish convention. People have no right to say that your husband can not . upport you simply because you happen to be a little more ambitious
