WILLARD MACK DOES THREE JOBS WELL Stage Star and Writer Turns Out a Highly Interesting Movie Story of Modern Gang Life. BY WALTER D. HICKMAN IT is seldom that one man does three tilings equally successful in one movie. Lut that is true in the case c: Willard Mack. This happens in an all-talker, “The Voice of the City, - ’ which has Mack as its author, a member of the cast, as well as the director. American audiences, have begun to expect true gang type creations in all of the stories that Mack has given the stage. His crooks are not always true to type, but they are individual. He does not glorify the crook, but rather is able to spin a yarn rbcut crime and those who commit it as part of the system of life in a large city.
And so I can report to you that the story of ‘ The Voice of the City” is a good yarn, full of suspense, and has a bunch of moments that are filled with the hero and the heroine.

Mack as a director brings to the talking screen that sa me sense of sureness that he has given tltfc stage. He knows how to create acticn He loses r.o '.une in getting his story started and getting you acquainted with his hero, the heroine and the villain. This picture

is a good example
of wise direction as applied to action and the spoken word. As an actor, Mack has always been able to stand on his own. In this story, he plays he role oi a wise and straight detective v ho knows the human side ot the young man who becomes at) unfortunate crook because of circumstances and companions. As the, detective. Mack reminds you a great deal of Lionel Barrymore as a detective in "Alias Jimmy Valentine.” So you see that Mack gets along famously in one picture as the author, director and character actor. Mid lie has a real speaking voice that records splendidly. The story of “The Voice of the City" concerns a young chap who was framed and sent to prison for a crime that he did not commit. Robert Ames is cast as the innocent crook and the acton s centered on his escape from prison, his honest love affair with his sweetie, played charmingly bv Sylvia Field: the work, of the villain, splendidly played by John Miiian. and the system used by the detective in giving our hero a clean slate as well as ijis method in getting unique justice for the villain. You nil] ne.ioy the comedy relief as well as the pathetic devotion of a snowbird to his pal. But this picture does excel it) accurate type characterization as well as realistic crook atmosphere. T am sure that this straightforword story of crook life done as an all-talker will meet with your hearty approval. Now at Loew'r Palace. st a a another effort to MAKE A BABY ?TAR •Just as Jackie Coogan jumped into fame and a. good bank account for his parents, just so will those bank of little Davie Lee, 4-year-oid I ry to make him another Jackie, When Jackie started to grow up and think of things with “it” to it, then the public became rather impatient with the lad. And so now the directors are trying to make Davey Lee the youngest talking star in the business.
You will see thi first effort ii "Sonny Boy.” Yoi recall that Dave; got, some when with A1 Jolson i* “The Si ng in i Fool” and tha J o 1 s o n ’ s son Sonny Boy” wa quite the sob ber rics. , And so, no leaving any ston unturned, the pro ducers have callet Davey’s first talk ing vehicle “Sonn; Bov.” I know tha

I always hav< the feeling that these child wonderi : should be at home playing ball anc | coin’ to school. Guess I am a little too old fashioned. Davey is a cut< 1 little voungster and he has beer | taught to speak his pieces rathei i nicely. I had the impression that then was always someone just arounc the corner giving the lad silent instruction. I know that I becarm rather unpopular with some peopl* because I do not rave over the chile wonders just because they are cute It seems to me that Jackie Coogar was sympathetic and fine in the reflected glory of Charlie Chaplin a>ic I have the same feeling regarding Davey Lee and his relations with A ] Jolson. But if Davey Lee becomes the nett star and delight of the children whe dream of being great actors, ther maybe Davey is to be welcomed watt open arms. It must be admitted that the child has a number of cute scene; and several that will make the eyes moistened. The story is a frail one the entire yarn beinfi adapted to the ability of the youngster. The adult roles are taken by Betty Bronson. tom dance, plays musical instruments and sings grand opera in a very sincere and grand manner. Am telling you that this seal is quite the actor this week. The revue also presents a man who sings nifties in a nifty fashion and does some pretty good hoofing in his large pants. T haven’t his name either but he has been with the Follies. This man knows his stage business and * how to build up instancy contact with his audience. Then there is also a chap who dances well on “snow shoes.” According to my way of thinking these events are the most important at the Indiana, with the exception of the work of Milton Slosser. Slosser knows how to handle a pipe organ in a novelty way. This week he is playing some of th? old tunes done in movie palaces before there was a pipe organ in a movie theater. Then Slosser is given* a chance to ping. This man has personality and ability. The movie feature is “Dangerous Woman.” one of those silly stories about a worthless dame who makes wrecks out of m#ny men before getting her just reward. This dangerous woman, played and talked by Baclanova, is a very impossible dame who does her wrecking in Africa. Two of her victims arc played by Clive Brook and Neil Hamilton. These men act much better than the story deserves. At times I could not understand Baclanova because of her foreign accent. Hamilton and Brook were right in their talking scenes. BERKELL GUTS TOP PRICE FOR PERFORMANCES Stock Producer Meets His Friendly Competition Wisely. When others might raise their top prices to meet “friendy competition” in the show business, Charles Berkell, in observing the 1.400 th performance of his organization at English's Sunday night, announced a lover top scale beginning next Sunday night. Before Mayor L. Ert Slack. Police Chief Claude Worley, other city officials, Ed Hunter of the Chamber of Commerce and one of the largest audiences of the season, Berkell and liis players pledged themselves to even higher accomplishments in the future than in the past. “I want to thank you all.” Berkell said after the first act. “The fourteen hundredth performance, and I am glad that it is Indianapolis. You are aware that I did not bring back the same company that I had last year. “I feel that as you see more of these new players that you are going to like them better. We do not know whether it is talking pictures or what has affected biftihess. I hope in the next few weeks to do better business and I expect to stay here just as long as you keep on coming.” Harry Hoxworth. director of the company, declared that in face of the “friendly competition” of the talkers and the like that beginning next Sunday night the lower floor scats would be reduced from 99 cents to 75 cents for all night performances. that the balcony and gallery seats would remain the same. Also that the matiness would not be changed. “Mr. Marshall feels that if. top price has been the cause of too many vacant seats at times, then he would reduce the top price.” Hoxworth said. “This is not to be taken to mean.” he said, “that the standard of production is going to be lowered. RUPTURE IS NOTATEAR NO BREAK TO HEAL Rupture is not a tear, but purely a museular weakness in the abdominal wall* Trusses merely brace these muscles but do not strengthen them —on the contrary, the gouging of the orHiriarj truss pad often increases this weakness as it tends to shut off circulation of the blood. STUART’S ADHESIF PLAPAO-PADS are entirely different—being mechamcoehemico applicators —made self-adhesive purposely to keep the muscle-tonic called “Plapao” continuously applied to the affected parts, and to minimize danger of slipping and painful friction. The adhesive fabric is soft as velvet, and clings to the body without straps, buckles or springs. Easy to apply—comfortable—inexpensive. Awarded Gold Medal, Rome, Grand Prix. Paris, Honorable Mention, Panama Pacific Exposition, San Francisco, etc. For almost a quarter century stacks of sworn testimonials from many different countries report success—without delay from work. She has just completed her contract with a stock company in New Orleans. Mayor Slack spoke of the honesty and sincerity behind the Berkell productions. “Mr. Berkell stands high in the entertainment field.” the major said. “His performances have always been given to us in an honest way. Many of these productions have been highly praised and have deserved more support than we have gmen them. “He has produced clean shows and he has given us an excellent company this season.” Ed Hunter speaking in behalf of the Chamber of Commerce told of bis attendance at many of the Berkell plays this season and in other seasons. “I am sure that we could have patronized these fine performances better,” Hunter said. “If we speak to our friends about these good performances I believe that it would help. These performances of wholesome entertainment make for a better city." James Blaine, leading man, introduced the various speakers.
