CONGRESS WILL FIGHT JO REEF PORT FREEDOM Britten Takes Lead in Opposing Plan to Abolish Courtesy. P'l t nito! }'<• WASHINGTON, May 3.—Congress is not disposed to end thr freedom of 11 1*' port privilege extended government officials v hen they return to the United States from official trip, abroad, tome members indicated today. Representative Fred A. Britten (Rep, 111.• took the lead in opposing the recommendation of a New York grand jury investigating the ease of Representative Morgan (Rep. Olno', that such courtesy would be abolished. “Not one official in one thousand even thinks about violating the courtesy of freedom of the port which allow. baggage to pass through custom officers without an examination " Britten .-aid. "Nothing is brought back from these trips that could b< fail'd coo rabar.d and the privilege : not abused by members of congress.” Should Take Mam Trips “When an official returns from abroad he should be allowed to lea'e the dock immediately to complete his official mission instead of being delayed for a baggage inspection with om> 2,000 other passenger: Repn - mauve William M. Morgan. who was accused of bringing liquor into the United States when given freedom of the New York port upon returning from a trip to Panama recently, also believes the courtesy should continue. “I recommend that all congressmen take as many trips as possible so as to see actual conditions in other countries," he said. “They especially should visit Panama. Such surveys are official business and the representatives' entry into the United States upon returning should be expedited," Morgan said. Comments on Decision Commenting on the New York grand jury's action in disposing of his case and its opinion that persons with the freedom of the port could bring in anything in their baggage without interference, Morgan said. “I can only repeat my previous declaration that there was no liquor in my ba: ■; . ■■ or in the baggage of any of my parly when we returned from Panama. About a score of people saw my luggage opened and thev know there was nothing illegal in it. The action of the grand jury merely is a further indication of my innocence.” 165 NEW FIRMS TO CITY DURING APRIL One hundred sixty-five new businesses were established in Indianapolis in April, a survey by the Business Digest showed today.
