LABOR TO HEAL FLIf SHATTERED HEALTH OF U. S. Nation Getting Back to Normal March of 1927, Says Physician. BY JOSEPH S. WASNEY United Tress Staff Correspondent WASHINGTON, March 29. Medical scientists in the United States are working night and day to rebuild the populace to the healthy state enjoyed before the influenza epidemic, according to Dr. C. C. Pierce, acting United States ! surgeon-general. The country is not as healthy today as it was two years ago because j of the ravages of influenza, but with tl'.e advent of spring it is believed j health conditions will return to normal, he said. “The influenza epidemic lowered the American health standard somewhat but the United States is r.till the healthiest country in the world,” Dr. Pierce said. “We are virtually free of human plague, with the exception of two cases of bubonic plague reported during the last j year. “The influenza epidemic attacked about 8,000,000 persons—one in every fifteen—and resulted in about 26,000 deaths. Naturally this will increase the death rate for the year but it is now dropping back to normal as the disease has died down.” Dr. Pierce said the public health service recommended those who had been attacked by the influenza germ submit themselves to physical exam-

Inations to ward off any lasting effects of the disease. “Heart disease, diabetes and Bright’s disease are still the leading death causes in America,” he said. “The death rate from tuberculosis continues to show a slight decline. “Reports from state health officers are beginning to show the usual spring increase of measles. There were about 13,000 new cases reported last week.” Dr. Pierce said a valiant effort is being made to check the world-wide spread of spinal meningitis. He said while the number of cases were not excessive for any one state the total number for the country was considered high. There were 329 new cases reported last week, an increase of 100 compared with the irevious week.

WEIRD FLYING I FREAK USED AS PLANE MODEL I Englishman Patterns His Craft After Pterodactl of Ancient Era. BY KEITH JONES United Press Staff Correspondent YEOVEL, England, March 29. Back a million years to the Mesozoic period when the air was peopled with those weird flying monsters, the featherless Pterodactyls, science now has gone in its latest attempt to solve the problem of safe ! flight. Whether the full solution lias been reached still is a question, but certain it is that a wholly new form j of airplane has been designed and flown. This new type of airplane known as the “Pterodactyl” has been developing many years under the direction of Captain G. T. R. Hill, late : of the Royal air force. Makes Successful Flights During the last three years Captain Hill has been making successful flights wdth experimental machines, differing in detail, but all embodying the same principle of construction —a tailless monoplane wing driven by a pusher propeller, and having a peculiar form of wing construction that practically eliminates any impossibility of the machine “stalling” in the air. It is this nonstalling feature, it is said, which makes the new machine safer to handle than any type of i airplane that has so far been con- j structed. Captain Hill said that tests had i shown that the machine would descend “pancake”—from any height at an angle of forty degrees to the perpendicular, the wing surface remain’ng all the while on an even keel. Another Safety Feature Another feature of the machine’s performance making for safety in fight, said Captain Hill, was that in making turns the machine “automatically kept its nose on the horizon,” thus obviating any danger of its nosing down into a spin. The Pterodactyl is fitted with a seventy-five horse power Genet radial air-cooled engine. Its top speed has not been tested definitely, but in test flights the latest model has easily run away from Westland Widgeon monoplanes of the same horse power and whose top speed of 105 miles an hour. No steps have been taken so far to put the Pterodactyl commercially on the market.
