GERMANS MAKE ARTIFICIAL OIL Produce Only 50,000 Tons in 1928; Depend on U. S. BY FREDERIC K Kill I rf* Staff Correspondent BERLIN, March 29.—Germany's widely-heralded method oi artificially producing oil from coal failed to supply more than a negligible part of the market for 1928, according to figures available from ajthoritative sources today. On the other hand, the United States continued to sell a large quantity of petroleum on the German market last tear hut failed to increase its sale, in step with the increase in consumption of oil, the figures revealed. Failure of the artificial method of oil production was revealed by the estimate that less than fifty thousand tons of synthetic gasoline was put on the market during the year, although there was no indication as to what effect the new method might ]iave in the future. Strong advances by Venezuelan and Russian companies provided the greatest competition for United Staffs oil in Germany, which produced domestically approximately 450,000 tons of light and heavy oils. Hanover’s natural wells produced 100 000 tons of crude nil for the year. Penile -hr competition, the United States sold Germany 47 per cent of its mineral oil imports during the yea r.
