GRAIN FUTURES BREAK LOWER IN PIT OPENING Cash Situation Declines Wheat; Liverpool Lower. tin United Press CHICAGO, March 27.—A slight reaction from Tuesday’s sharp break \.as noticeable in wheat and com today. Both grains made fractional advances. Oats, however, were irregular. At the opening wheat was up % cent to % cent, com was % cent to % cent higher and oats ranged irom Vi. cent off to V*. cent up. Provisions were slightly higher. Wheat was inclined to be nervous and erratic at the start because of uncertainty over the money situation and the stock market. The long interest was much reduced by Tuesday’s heavy liquidation, which was participated in by the east and large Chicago dealers. Liverpool was lower today, but not so weak as expected. Receipts of corn have been improving during the week and outside terminals continue to make good offerings to Chicago. The market has been inclined to hold steadier than wheat. Seeding of oats is progressing in the southern section of the belt as far north as central Illinois.

(Bv Thomson & McKinnon) NEW YORK. March 27.—Undoubtedly the recent wave of liquidation has brought about a substantial contraction in brokers’ loans, but whether it is sufficiently large to meet the ideas of the federal reserve board, will we believe, be determined by the immediate trend in money rates. Assuming that the drop for the week will approximate half a billion dollars, it will be well to keep in mind that such a reduction would bring the total back to only two or three hundred million below where it was when the reserve board issued its warning early in February. While a further moderate recovery is not unlikely, we believe a resumption of the broad upward market we have had prior to the recent acute money squeeze is improbable until interest rates are brought nearer to normal levels. t
STOCK PRICES OPEN STRONG IN MAW DEALS Banks Promise Funds to Prevent Credit Panic.
BY ELMER C. WALZER United Press Financial Editor NEW YORK, March 27.—Wa1l Street recovered its poise today and trading on the stock market opened more nearly normal, with prices strong. Tuesday's record trading of more than 8,000,000 shares motivated by 20 per cent call money had left no hangover. The rally begun just before Tuesday's close continued in early dealings today with gains running to 4 points in the case of New Haven, which reached 87%, up %. There remained possibility of further high call money rates, but this was partly offset by promise of local banks that they would pour funds into the market if necessary to prevent a credit ( panic. The first sale of Radio was made at 93%, up %, on a block of 5,300 shares. Coty gained 2 points to 32 Vi , Hudson IVs to 83 Ts. Warner Brothers 21s to 104 %, Kennecott 2Vs to 92, Columbia Graphophone 1% to 70% and John Manville IVi to 170. General Motors held steady around the previous close of 82 Vi, while other motor shares, with the exception of Packard, were strong. Packard lost 4 points to 126, while Nash rose nearly four to 101; Hupp soared 5% to 67% and Hudson rose more than a point. Public Service rose more than four points on its record earnings statement. Vanadium soared 9% to 93%.
After the first wave of buying had subsided thd* market again turned irregular and early gains were reduced. Confidence was not entirely restored due to the uncertainty over the credit situation. Brokers were still reticent about making suggestions on buying and most of them urged liquidation on bulges. Incidentally, margin requirements were boosted by several companies today to a minimum of 50 per cent. Call money remained at 15 per cent, the highest initial rate in nine years. Money was reported flowing into New York from out of town sources, and New York banks were said to have come to the aid of the money market, leading to the belief that Tuesday’s 20 per cent rate would not be repeated today. Sales in the first half hour totaled 800,600 shares, compared with 705,400 shares in the same period Tuesday. Price movements continued irregular in the first hour, but declines for the most part were not of large proportions. Strong support 7vas encountered above Tuesday’s lows. International Telephone & Telegraph was an outstanding feature of strength, soaring 10% points to anew record high was 252. The new stock on the curb moved up sympathetically after a strong opening on a block of 12,300 shares.
