POWER MONEY DEFEATED VOTE Spent $500,000 to Fight California Measure. Bn Time* Sued at WASHINGTON, March 22.—California power companies spent $501,605 in one campaign to defeat an initiative measure which would have permitted the state to develop its own power resources, the federal trade commission learned at the first of this week’s propaganda hearings. They spent it in such a way that the state senate ordered investigaion of the whole campaign. A special committee reported that: Numerous methods were used to mislead and deceive the voter. Organizations were formed to oppose the measure with high sounding patriotic names which hid the identity of the intersted paries. The companies employed as campaign workers persons prominent in commercial bodies, farm organizaions. labor unions, social, literary and civic clubs, without these hii’ed representatives disclosing their employment. Persons so hired were frequently given expense accounts which “might be designated as influence money.” LEAD IN PHONE TALKS Canadians Greatest Users; U. S. Comes Next. SLIGHT HOPE OF TAXSLASK Government Expenses for Next Two Years Increased. Bn Times Special WASHINGTON, March 22.—There wil be no tax reductions for the first two years of the Hoover administration, in the opinion of treasury experts todjiy. Though Secretary Andrew Mellon is understood to hope he can cap his official career with another cut approximating those distributed under the Coolidge administration, the state of the treasury and approaching expenditures for cruisers, farm and flood relief and other items are believed to place it out of the question. At the same time treasury heads are gratified by the tremendous gain in income tax receipts reported for the first nine months of the 1929 fiscal year. If the increase continues, it was estimated that the surplus might run nearer $100,000,000 than the $26,000,000 already predicted.
