(B-- Thomson & McKinnon! NEW YORK. March 15.—Unbiased judgment of- market action compells the aae mission that whatever has transpired so Car to the nature of restrictive efforts has been of -little avail. Today’s opening and subsequent market action impresses on strongly with the Idea that dullness early In the week was merely restrait rather than elimination of the stock markets expression of public confidence in future values. Only moderately constructive overnight developments were considered ol sufficient Importance to bring this confidence again to play. The unchanged bank rate and the small decrease in loans were given credit for inaugurating today's strength, but back of this is a nation's prosperity which will not be denied, new evidence- of which Is continually being brought to the public attention. Gratifying as was the prosperity of 1928, Washington now suggests that based on preliminary- income tax returns it was under rather than over estimated, and nothing has come to light so far this year to show that it- has in any way diminished. First quarterly reports will soon be issued and these vjll undoubtedly substantiate claims of continued progress and encourage increasing pujolic interest in the market. This brings us to the grave danger of everdiscounting in prices that which has been accomplished industrially and also put us face-to. face with whatever additional fofee mav be brought to bear by federal reserve authorities in the extension of their efforts toward contraction. If these are kept constantly in mind they should Drove a valuable safeguard in the matter o.’ over extension of accounts.
In the Cotton Market
(By Thomson & McKinnon) 'NEW YORK, March 15.—For some reason the cotton market is not .very responsive to continued bad weather and eood rabies from abroad. Recent liquidation has probably supplied the trade with a sufficient number of contracts to take care of immediate needs. The disposition to go into the new crops and get out of the old shows that the fear of short supplies this summer Is not shared by the entire trade. When we take a broad view of the market, technical conditions should be overlooked, and it's certainly a fact that farm work is late, business better. knd to follow this, is the approaching session of congress, which will surely take some action favorable to the producer. Summing up the situation, we appear to be- in a trading sone. with higher prices Id come later. NEW ORLEANS t- - High. tow. dose. CLOSING DEALS SLASH GAINS IN WHEATPRICES Corn Holds Above Thursday’s , Level in Day’s Grain Trading. B.v United Press CHICAGO, March 15.—Free offering of wheat near close here today reduced gains made on generally bullish cable news. Corn held above Thursday’s level due to strength of wheat and the improved shipping business. Oats were dull and lower. At close wheat was % to % cent higher, com was up Vs. to !i cent and oats were V to V s cent lower. Provisions were slightly higher. Wheat opened sharply higher on the unexpected strength of Liverpool and continued unfavorable crop news from part of southwest. Liverpool moved still higher during the day and Chicago followed advanced there. Argentine shipments were not so large, and demand from continent showed considerable improvement. Snow was falling in western Kansas and Nebraska. Cash prices were unchanged. Receipts was thirty-three cars. Corn moved upward with wheat but did not show as strong a tone as latter grain. Offerings were light and there was some buying by Chicago operators. Shipping demand was much better but Kansas City was a depressing factor on the cash. Cash prices were unchanged to 14 cent higher. Receipts were 187 cars. Oats were quiet throughout most of session, and as firmness was maintained'in other grains no weakness was apparent. Cash prices were unchanged. Receipts were forty cars.
