HOOVER AMAZES ' WASHINGTON IN 10 OATS' WORK Flying Start Is Made in Office by Nation’s New Chief Executive. BY LAWRENCE SULLIVAN Lnited Press Staff Correspondent WASHINGTON. March 15.—After ten days in the White House, President Hoover has official WashingA ton somewhat amazed over the vigor and boldness of his activities. Despite the fact he has been harrassed by the day-to-day direction oi UnitCTl States policy toward the Mexican disturbances, Hoover has found time and energy to call a special session of congress, enunciate anew and far-reaching policy of oil conservation and dispose of a five-year controversy by opening to inspection the treasury department records on the larger tax refunds. Recognizes Staff ' He has put into operation anew and broader policy of press relations, laid the ground-work for a nation-wide inquiry into law enforcement and judicial reform, and outlined informally to leaders in congress his general program for the special session of congress next month. At odd moments he has orginazed the White House staff on a permanent basis, disposed of his major appointments in the domestic service. including four assistant secretaries, determined his course relative to the national origins immigration quotas, and begun consideration of his diplomatic appointments. Sandwiched between these chores, Hoover has received the full diplomatic corps at the White House, held an official reception for the supreme court, received the credentials of the new minister of th" Irish Free State, and approved pirns for remodeling the White House executive office to make room for his enlarged staff. 200 Official Callers The President has received more than 200 official callers at the executive offices and has invited guests to lunch or dine with him at the White House on fojir occasions. He has discussed policies ranging from minor executive appointments to waterways, and from law enforcement to irrigation and reclamation, world court and farm relief to congressional reapportionment. Meanwhile, he is gathering notes daily for his message to congress next month. Since he took the oath of office he has no social engagement which called for his leaving the White House. Humans on the sacred island of Miyajima, in the Inland Sea of Japan, are forbidden to die or be born.

Happy in Jail IS u United Press YOUNGSTOWN. 0., March 15.—A well-laid liquor smuggling plot which resulted in the intoxication of prisoners at the county jail here has been unearthed by Sheriff Stone after many weeks of investigation. A bootlegger on the the investigation revealed, paid visits to the jail under cover of darkness, and with members of the county road gang acting as middlemensmuggled the contraband into the prison. Through a skylight in a.trap door, the inmates climbed to the roof of the jail and let down a cord to the alley below, where the bootlegger tied a fettle of moonshine on it. Sheriff Stone discovered the plot when the prisoners greet- / ed him in a happy and hilarious mood.

Englemen are defendants in a condemnation suit to obtain sufficient property for a 60-foot right-of-way for construction of a paved highway from Wab ish to Peru. The suit was filed by Arthur Gilliom, former Indian attorney-general, and brought from the Wabash circuit court to Grant circuit court on a change of venue.
