LAND SWINDLE ON VAST SCALE SWEEPS WEST Steal, Pure and Simple, Is Perpetrated in Name of Boulder Dam. by max stern Time* Staff Correspondent LAB VEGAS, Nev., March 13. The newest racket is the great Boulder Dam land swindle. It is being staged around this little Nevada town, in the Mojave desert, 200 miles from anywhere. And it is an adventure in genteel pocket picking that has reached the proportion of Big Business. The “Vegas boom” is legitimate to a certain extent. This town is the only railway center near the proposed $100,000,000 Black Canyon dam. It is but twenty-seven miles from the dam site and it is destined to reap certain growth as the result of cheap power. .. „ But upon this solid foundation unscruplous land sharks have builded fairy castles of get-rich-quick speculation that surpass anything ever in the west. These, by high-powered radio talks, personal campaigns in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and eastern cities and false prospectus maps are drawing to certain heart-breaking disappointment thousands of poor and middle class wage and salary earners. Town Covers Square Mile Counting its red light and green light districts the bootleg joints—Las Vegas covers about one square mile. The town limits enclose fourteen square miles. Beyond these lines is a no man’s land of sun-baked or sand-swept desert. And here begin the "city subdivisions” with “city lots” for the far-off suckers. There already are 3,000 acres of such “subdivisions.” They have teen bougth at from $1 to $25 an acre. Some are tax-title lands, titles of which never may be cleared. They are being sold in twenty-five-foot lots, as high as S6O a front foot. I visited four of the seven of these far-off desert subdivisions of a city that is not a city. Las Vegas has at most 6,500 people. Yet you could settle within its own limits and the new “subdivisions” a city as big as Los Angeles or San Francisco. One was called Las Vegas View Tract. It was four and one-half miles from the town, an uneven patch of dry desert. From most places in it one would need a fiftyfoot periscope to get the cherished view of Las Vegas. The owner has scraped off the sagebrush for “streets,” and set white posts to sign the fancy mamed streets. Otherwise no work had been done. Sell at Two for SB9. The cost had been S2O an acre, an exorbitant price. The lots are being sold to working folks at the bargain price of two for $79, plus $lO for “street work.” The most astounding wildcat land venture, however, lies near the scene of the great lake to be created back of Black Canyon dam. It is called Bonier Dam park, and for the fabulous fulminators of its backers’ prospectus a certain Los Angeles real estate man has had his California license withdraw by Real Estate Commissioner Barneson. This “park” is touted as a scenic lakeside resort-to.be, where the 10,000 workmen of the dam project Will travel “about thirty minutes’ /drive from the dam’s location” and live under “shade trees” and on “graded streets.” Closer scrutiny reveals that instead of the “park” nestling athwart the blue and placid lake it more likely will be .some five miles distant. Actually it lies in a wash that drain; a 100-mile square area, is sixteen miles from the dam site, probably never will be anything but what it is, a part of the great arid, sun-baked, open spaces. \ Yet more than 1,200 lots have been sold in California, Texas, Idaho, Nevada and eastern states at as high as S9B for a 25x102-foot plot. Burglars Get $lB in Shop Burglars who forced their way into Harry Balch’s smoke shop at 805 North Illinois street Tuesday night and stole $lB. Mrs. Hazel Cooper. 611 East Southern avenue, reported to police.the loss of a diamond ring valued at S3OO. The ring slipped from her finger while she was on a shopping tour.

ASK $29,500 FROM TAXI COMPANY FOR INJURIES Couple and Son File Suit Against Checker Cab. O.MARGET Enmity Toward Dixie Chief Resented by Fort. Bu Times Special WASHINGTON, March 13.—Hubert Work, Republican national chairman, again became the center of a controversy today when it was learned that Representative Franklin Fort of New Jersey, secretary of the national committee, does not like his political chief’s hostile attitude toward Colonel Horace Mann, Hoover’s southern campaign manager. ) Since all parties have brought their compalints to President Hoover—Mann, Work and Fort—it is probable the President will be forced to decide whether the Mann or Work policy will be followed in reorganizing the G. O. P. below the Mason and Dixon line. Temporarily Hoover has kept out of the quarrel between Mann and the national committee, but there are indications he yet may intervene. In resentment against Work’s effort to eliminate Mann’s influence, the latter has washed his hands of practical politics and has dropped out of the southern reformation movement. Despite general approval of his success in handling the campaign in the south the national committeemen are willing to let him quit. His proposal for a “lily white” regime is known to have been disapproved by some politicians. Bandits Rob Man of sls Two young bandits Tuesday night held up Morgan Graves, 640 South Noble street, and robbed him of sls. The holdup occurred near Graves’ home. CLEAN KIDNEYS BY DRINKING LOTS OF WATER Take Salts to Flush Kidneys if Bladder Bothers or Back Hurts. Eating too much rich food may produce kidney trouble in some form, says a well-known authority, because the acids created excite the kidneys. Then they become overworked, get sluggish, clog up and cause all sorts of distress, particularly backache and misery in the kidney region, rheumatic twinges, severe headaches, acid stomach, constipation, torpid liver, sleeplessness, bladder and yrinary irritation. The moment your back hurts or kidneys aren’t acting right, or if bladder bothers you, begin' drinking lots of good water and also get about four ounces of Jad Salts from any good pharmacy; take a tablespoonful in a glass of water before breakfast for a few days and your kidneys may then act fine. This famous salts is made from the acid of grapes and lemon juice, combined with lithia, and has been used for years to flush clogged kidneys and stimulate them to activity; also to neutralize the acids in the system so that they no longer irritate, thus often relieving bladder disorders. Jad Salts cannot injure anyone; makes a delightful effervescent lithia-water drink which millions of men and women take now and then to help keep the kidneys and urinary organs clean, thus often avoiding serious kidney disorders. —Advertisement.
